  • Bashini Mahomed - Recognise your potential, empower yourself with learning and take control

Owner Dynamic Shipping Services Bashini Mahomed is a force to be reckoned with, in the world of transcontinental logistics. As rainmaker at Dynamic Shipping Services, a logistics management company in Durban, she’s more than a businesswoman; she’s a determined leader. After two decades in corporate logistics, Bashini’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2019 at a conference in Hong Kong. An ex-colleague urged her to start her own venture and she was inspired by the challenge. Making the most of one of Hong Kong’s tourist attractions, Bashini visited a temple and threw the mystical Chinese Sticks that are said to offer guidance and spiritual clarity. “Well, I knew what I wanted to do.” Bashini identified an untapped opportunity in the timber industry in Durban and decided to set up a timber packing facility, and with her husband’s support her path was set. Resigning from her corporate job in February 2020, Bashini left the comfort and financial security of a stable career. Five days later, she received a call from a customer in need. His logistics service provider had decided to offer exclusivity to his competitor, and he needed help urgently. “Within less than 24 hours I had the task of setting up a timber packing operation, packing ten containers, and turning them into the Durban port stacks, with a 6 a.m. stack closure. It was a baptism of fire and the beginning of a whirlwind journey,” says Bashini. “In business, your reputation matters, and I delivered.” Facing challenges head-on A couple of weeks later Covid struck but Bashini was able to adapt. The timber industry proved to be a fortuitous choice as it fell into the ‘essential services’ category. A resilient customer base, hard work and dedication helped her navigate the pandemic. Bashini’s journey isn’t just about the path she’s taken; it’s about the unique way she’s shaping her destination, it’s about creating something special. “I don’t like to measure success only in turnover, but I am proud of our achievements,” she said. Bashini started the business on her own, and the headcount has increased to five, but her impact extends beyond this. “I’m very proud that I’ve managed to provide employment in the last three years, particularly in view of Covid, the floods and the riots. And not just directly to my own staff,” she points out. As an extension of the DSS service offering, Bashini has indirectly created employment for 25 to 30 people from the Umlazi-Prospecton area. It’s important to Bashini that her business is contributing to the local economy, creating opportunities, and helping families thrive – a testament to her belief in business as a force for positive change. Building relationships to build a business “One of our core principles,” she shares, “is to build strong relationships with our clients. We want them to see us as an extended family, not just another business entity. We’re not aiming to be the biggest corporate clearing and forwarding company; we want to be known for our family-oriented, customer-centric approach.” That said, the financial metrics are impressive. Within three years, turnover has skyrocketed to more than what was envisioned. Bashini doesn’t care about titles and has no interest in micromanaging her team but expects them to take ownership of their roles. “I’m very open and transparent with my staff,” she explains, “They know exactly where the business is going and what’s expected of them. I’m here to lead my team to success.” A role model Bashini attributes her work ethic to her father. “He was a hard worker, and I keep telling my staff, what you put in is what you get out. I don’t have a degree, but at every company that I’ve worked, I’ve taken every opportunity for training and educated myself in a field that excites me. Hard work, determination and resilience will always churn out results.” Bashini acknowledges she’s faced challenges as a woman in the logistics industry, but she takes pride in shattering stereotypes. She’s confident in her industry knowledge, and her experience and expertise have empowered her. “There is definitely space for women in this field and we can excel and make a significant impact.” Quick to acknowledge the support of her husband, Bashini’s blessed with two daughters, an eight-year-old and a 21-year-old. “I ’d love to tell you I read, but while I read a lot of industry material, when I’m relaxing, I’m more likely to be watching Liverpool on TV or following cricket and rugby.” Bashini leaves aspiring women in business with a powerful message: “Recognise your potential, empower yourself with learning and take control of your destiny, it all starts with you. If you are not empowered, how do you expect to empower others and effect change.”

  • Bongi Mkhize – Success stems from hard work

Bongi Mkhize, the CEO of the KwaZulu-Natal Joint Municipal Pension Fund (NJMPF), grew up in Ndwedwe which is situated in a very underdeveloped region. In commenting on his childhood and early schooling Bongi said, “As a young man I had to juggle between herding my father’s cattle as well as going to school. In so doing this taught me to be disciplined and self-sufficient in facing the challenges of life.” For Bongi there were challenges such as studying without text books because his father could not afford to buy them. However, despite the challenges faced in acquiring a basic education Bongi did push through them and achieve his goals. Bongi holds a bachelor’s degree in finance and a postgraduate diploma in investment management and banking, both bestowed upon him by the University of KwaZulu-Natal. His first job was with one of the banks where his duties included customer service and bank telling. Bongi saw a need to further his education and that paved a way to serve and complete his South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) articles, which he did with the Office of the Auditor General. Here Bongi gained significant experience in compliance, statutory, auditing and accounting in the public sector. His auditing experience includes internal and external auditing of both provincial and national departments, municipalities, and public entities. Bongi then was provided with an opportunity to join the KwaZulu-Natal Joint Municipal Pension Fund. He explains, “I started as the finance manager and grew through the ranks and served as the chief financial officer from 2011 to 2018. The board appointed me as the deputy CEO in 2018 which gave me a more strategical role that paved the way for me to become CEO in 2019.” As he was from a previously disadvantaged community, a major challenge that Bongi has faced has been the need to double his efforts in the work environment in order to be on par with his peers and achieve his job targets within a normal time. However, he says, “My story, which is the story of my life has always been to push myself to the limit to ensure that I achieve better than my peers. I think that my success stems from hard work, dedication and commitment.” Last but not least, Bongi is easily able to adapt to whatever environment he is thrown into. In commenting on what has motivated his career path Bongi says, “I am inspired by poverty because of my humble beginnings. I saw where my community was struggling, and I thought that I needed to change that narrative and do things differently. Basically, in so doing, I had to look for financial literacy programmes because I felt that is where my community and people in South Africa in general are lacking and is the big issue. In order to alleviate poverty, one has to ensure that people are well equipped to make those informed decisions.” “My passion is seeing our members making good financial decisions and striving for their wellbeing at retirement. Even now government wanted to allow access to pension fund during your working life. Obviously, this means exposing our communities to even more risk rather than saving for retirement.” One of the areas that interests Bongi is the changing shape of the global economy and the rapid development of technologies. He believes innovation, such as robo-advisors and the modernisation of products and services through IT, has a part to play in NJMPF’s line of business. “Using technology to lower fees is critical for a retirement funding service and its members. Experts believe that as entities have grown, complexity, specialisation, silos, and ultimately hierarchy have choked off the capacity to readily adapt and innovate. Finding innovative ways to enhance and accelerate member participation in the retirement funding arrangement is important.” Bongi’s work hours are very demanding and he says that he spends most of his time at work. However, in order to disconnect and relax, he spends time with his family – his wife and three children. In conclusion Bongi says, “My motto is every day is a second chance. So, whatever was not done correctly the previous day, you’ve got today to correct.”

  • Zamangwane Khanyile - To afford and achieve your life goals takes sacrifice

Head of Research and Development Beier Envirotec Zamangwane (Zama) Khanyile is currently employed by Beier Envirotec as the head of research and development. By qualification, she is a chemical engineer which she studied at UKZN Howard College. Zama has worked for Beier Envirotec for 11 years now, which is about a third of her life. Commenting on her career choice, she said, “I’ve always wanted to challenge myself in some way. So, when it came to choosing a career, I did a bit of research to find out which was the most difficult, as for some reason I like to make life hard for myself. Chemical engineering piqued my interest, and I went for it. It was taxing, but I did manage to get through it in record time.” For her tertiary education, Zama received a sponsorship from the Beier Envirotec. As soon as she graduated, she was offered permanent employment there and subsequently worked her way up to senior management. Helping her grow Zama says that during her journey, she has been assisted by people at work who have really helped her grow. For example, she says her mentor Warren Sachs (Pr Eng Mechanical) was so ‘on the ball’ that she wanted to be half the person he was! At work, she says she also shadowed a very great man, eventually taking over his role in the research and development space. “He was very knowledgeable. I think the best in Africa, and he motivated me to want to be the best as well,” said Zama. Her current boss, Mawethu Ntsholo, who joined the company shortly after her, has also been an inspiration. She explained, “He’s got a great story to tell himself. He comes from humble beginnings, and he’s done so well for himself. But he saw potential in me, challenged me and gave me the space to grow. He would also come to me for assistance; I actually taught him technical aspects of our products and processes, he taught me a lot about management and business, we had our fair share of fights, but we grew together.” Making an impact Commenting on challenges that she has faced; Zama says that her upbringing was tumultuous. Consequently, she wanted to do something that could help her make an impact not only on the people around her but in the world, and engineering was the way to go. She added that in chemical engineering, you learn about chemical process engineering and design; now she works in technical textiles which is quite different, so she has had to learn everything again from scratch. Being a young black girl in a very male dominated space was also a challenge in that she says you have to work almost five to ten times as much to be seen. She remembers when initially walking onto the shop floor, where the work force comprised only males who she had to supervise, questioning how she was going to tell someone as old as her dad what to do. Her approach was to humble herself and acknowledge that she had much to learn. She did not want to come across as being bossy or cheeky. Instead, Zama was consultative. As such she was able to gain respect until eventually, she said, she could “call the shots”. Zama admitted that she was supported by her sponsor at the time who was the second-generation owner of the business, the late Mr. Hans Beier. “He made sure that I wouldn’t be abused. Not to say that I was favoured in any way. I’m here because of the results that I’ve been able to achieve through putting in the work, the time, and through sheer resilience.” Zama is currently undergoing a master’s programme with the University in America in textile sciences. Her ultimate aim is for the company to be the leading industrial filtration experts in Africa. Besides work, Zama likes to give back to her community. Her goal, as she is creative person, is to build an arts and craft centre to help young people express themselves creatively. Much sacrifice Her advice to young women is that success takes much sacrifice. She explained, “You have to choose your struggle. Waking up in the morning to go to school is painful. I would much rather sleep in and watch movies all day. But which pain is better, being uneducated and not finding a good job, or getting up at earlier than you’d like to get to work and earn a decent living? To afford and achieve your life goals takes sacrifice. So, choose a struggle and put in the effort.” In addition, says Zama, industry is really receptive of women more than ever before. “There are great opportunities for women. You literally can do and have whatever you want if you put in the effort. Follow your wildest dreams and don’t be afraid to try something new.” Zama is proud to say that she has had much opportunity in her company to deliver innovative products, and to test the limits. She has been responsible for fine tuning processes resulting in improved outputs. When Zama has time off work, she enjoys being with her family. She explained her focus on her studies resulted in her neglecting some relationships, which she is trying to rebuild. Zama has a nine-year-old daughter who loves going to the beach. As her daughter is artistic, Zama enjoys spending time with her as she creates new paintings and drawings. She added with a laugh, “I also enjoy using my sister as a guinea pig for trying out new hairstyles and reading as much as I can.” Being part of KZN Top Business Women has provided Zama with the recognition she has been longing for and she is grateful for the honour. “Being in a manufacturing environment is very pressurised. It’s high emotion. Sometimes you feel like your efforts are not recognised. I feel that all my hard work has been for something. It’s really great.”
