  • Esayvanie Reddy – Building high-growth businesses

As the late Mr. Rajen Reddy would say, “The measure of achievement and success must rightfully be balanced by the knowledge that we must pass failure along the way. Education is when you read the fine print, experience is what you get if you don’t. Experience is, therefore, the greatest teacher and the greatest leveller.” History has often recorded such events that spin on an uncontrolled axis, levered by forces beyond human control. For instance, nobody, not even physics could have foreseen that the sale of four barrels of diesel fuel would effectively launch KZN Oils back in 1998, but it did, and the rest as they say is history. The history itself is peppered with blood, sweat, and tears; a history inscribed with the ink of disappointment and successive failures. KZN Oils now forms part of a larger entity, The RR Group of companies. These entities are largely black women-owned and led businesses with the majority of female personnel holding executive positions. While maintaining a BBBEE level-1 company audit status, the Group aggressively supports black-owned businesses across the board. Mrs Celeste Esayvanie Sivalingum Reddy as the newly appointed executive director and the Group CEO, is an accomplished business woman with over 30 years of experience in the petroleum, quick service restaurant, healthcare manufacturing, telecommunications, and distribution industry. Mrs Reddy’s main focus is on building high growth businesses with solid balance sheets and exponentially growing profit and loss functions to ensure business going-concern, job securities for her people and sustainable returns for the shareholders. As an astute business leader with a wealth of experience, Mrs Reddy oversees sound strategic manifestation and delegation across all business functions, ensures profitability and is the chief custodian of the Group’s brand image. She is an innovative visionary and has a traceable success record. Equipped with hands-on experience in business strategy and development, she applies herself in alignment with the RR Group’s values, goals, and objectives. The RR Group always strives to retain a people-first focus, for with the empowerment of people, comes the empowerment of communities and empowered communities can add to the positive socio-economic growth of South Africa and the world. The Group prides itself on establishing self-sustainable business models, which in return, allows them to give back to their communities in the form of jobs, business opportunities, low-cost high-quality products, and corporate social investment initiatives. The RR Group of companies comprise various industries such as the energy sector, telecommunications, health care manufacturing, quick service restaurant industry, and property development and construction. Growing KZN Oils within the African commercial sector may sound farfetched. However, engaging with neighbouring countries offer a better footing in negotiating with either import or export of liquid bio-fuel (LBF), while partnering with other non-refining wholesalers will increase their footprint and enable them to negotiate lucrative deals that will benefit both parties to ensure a complete solution for all customers. Looking further than the African continent, partnering with international countries will ensure the impact of greener and cleaner fuels. And moving into a full-on retail offering will ensure control of the entire supply chain which ultimately results in more affordable products to end-users. KZN Oils will be looking at not only supplying commodities such as fuels, but also Jet A1, other relevant lubricants, and becoming the preferred transporter for major petroleum companies throughout the world. Champion Health Care (CHC) will soon follow suit in gaining momentum in the African market if it hasn’t been doing so already. The Africa Health Trade Expo in conjunction with the Department of Trade and Industry is one of CHC’s signature exhibitor events. CHC has been in attendance since 2019 and has again made its presence on the virtual Africa Health Trade Expo 2021. Through these networking events, Champion Health Care has been initiating trades with neighbouring African countries, identifying machinery that will improve productivity and reduce costs, investigating product customisation to address customer needs, and ensuring products meet private and public sector specifications. The possibilities of franchising a health care manufacturing company are endless. Supplying from a toothpick to a full flame-grilled or fried chicken, Ko-lay is on its way to becoming one of the sought-after distribution centres. Currently supplying about roughly fifty Grill to Go outlets within the Caltex KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng network, Ko-lay seeks to supply to all provinces in South Africa. By developing a cradle-to-grave mentality, they can control an entire supply chain, expand their logistics fleet, introduce new and exciting products, continuously create employment, and showcase various franchise models. Franchising in the quick service restaurant industry has taken on a storm in the past few years. Ko-lay currently has a fully-fledged flagship diner store in the heart of Durban, and the near future will make way for low to high-end Ko-lay franchise offerings. With the increase in chicken products becoming a staple diet for most of South Africa and the African continent, Ko-lay Home of Chicken is an offering you want to look out for. JD Telecoms is firmly cementing themselves as leaders in the telecommunication industry with a focus on satellite connectivity and educational services. The initiative for JD Telecoms is to bridge the digital divide towards affordable connectivity. They aim to make connectivity accessible and affordable to every household and business on the African continent, regardless of the income bracket. Established in 2019, JD Telecoms has already become an approved Telkom Dealer for B2B and B2C products and services and also has a business processing outsourcing (BPO) contact centre. In conclusion, the progression of the RR Group of companies will depend on their adaptability towards the digital age. And there is an immense amount of ongoing effort in the background to digitalise these companies. The future holds exciting insights into online ordering platforms, payment gateways, online client portals, online loyalty programs, and online monitoring and analytics for a better user experience just to name a few. “In closing, there is a need for building high-growth businesses with a pan-African focus in aiding the newly emerging African elite to create a sense of diversity in unity in mobilising Africans towards the struggle of independence and social cohesion. As business leaders, we must come together and need to utilise our resources to encourage and strengthen bonds of solidarity between all indigenous and diaspora ethnic group of African descent. We must also emphasise the need to make specific meaningful and purposeful contributions to the historic task of transitional justice from apartheid to democracy under overarching social justice. This can be made possible through the development of ethical leaders.”

  • Dominic Collett – New Chairperson for the KBCC

Dominic Collett has been re-elected as the chairperson of the KwaZulu-Natal Business Chambers Council (KBCC). He was also recently re-elected as treasurer on the board of the iLembe Chamber of Commerce. Collett has a passion for development, and he is a technical director at Zutari. The KBCC is the representative voice of organised business in KwaZulu-Natal. Membership is open to all formal business representative organisations in the province, with the major chambers and business organisations in KwaZulu-Natal already members. These include the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Minara Chamber of Commerce, Pietermaritzburg and Midlands Chamber of Business, iLembe Chamber of Commerce, KwaZulu-Natal Growth Coalition, Zululand Chamber of Commerce, Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce, KwaZulu-Natal Youth Chamber, FABCOS and NAFCOC. The main intention of the KBCC is to provide a platform for interaction between government and business. Collett says, “KwaZulu-Natal is the only province to have this type of organisation. This platform elevates the local business chambers’ ability to be able to interact with government to a higher level. We can bring local business matters to the Premier to be dealt with at provincial level.” Currently, there are critical government and businesses interventions that need to be dealt with together. The KBCC provides input on economic growth and strategy to provincial government, especially through the KwaZulu-Natal Economic Council, which is representative of all four social parties – civil society, labour, government and business. The KwaZulu-Natal Economic Council is also the only such formation in the country and mirrors, on a national level, the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac). “The KZN Economic Council is important to ensure that business is represented at a time where we need to restore confidence and rebuild our economy, especially relating to the impact of Covid and the events of July 2021,” said Collett. Together the social partners have dedicated themselves to a social compact to rebuild the province. No other provinces have a weapon of attacking the problems together or an open government that wants to interact. “We are way ahead of the game, the KBCC is stable platform where government can address business as one body, and the KBCC can respond as business,” concluded Collett. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1wrBmaJzLU

  • Jannie Rossouw - A Future Beyond Business Recalculation

The pandemic created a “burning platform” for most if not all of us. Our lives had a specific routine, we knew what to expect and the future was planned based on conventional wisdom and our understanding of how the world, …..our world, operated. Many people found themselves in a place and space of discomfort which created unintended consequences for their businesses and their personal lives. We may also entertain a perspective that the aftermath of the pandemic became a catalyst for change. We needed to re-invent ourselves and the way in which we do business. We know that change for the mere sake of change is not productive, but if we can venture through this maize of uncertainty we and our businesses can potentially be in a better space. We need to choose between: · Our willingness to adapt for the better or · Remain where we are whilst we are setting ourselves up for potential failure and hardship As we embrace 2022 we need to find our “mojo”, create a new future filled with promise and opportunity. “Where there is no vision, the people perish..” (Proverbs 29:18). Although the context of this verse is far removed from our current circumstances it does emphasize the value of having a vision for yourself and your business. We have done well to navigate our way through and around the challenges of lockdowns and economic turmoil. Many have succumbed to the pressure of not having the means and access to cash reserves to see another day. What are business leaders to do? · Stand up and be counted – be a leader for your business partners, employees, suppliers, clients and the community in which you operate. Be part of the solution! · Take ownership of your own life, your business and it`s challenges, the circumstances in which you operate and your vision of the future. · It will necessitate you to renew your vision for the business and determine how it will impact upon the strategy of the business. The practical realities to step up to the plate and face reality head-on · An objective business assessment will help you to identify gaps in the structure and operations which poses the highest risk to future success · The core value proposition of the business needs to be tested for future viability. It might need to be refreshed, expanded or even shrunk. · This is also a time to re-evaluate the skills of your employees. We live in a brave new world where the “recipe” which worked before might not be aligned to the needs and requirements of your target market. There are also new work dynamics to be addressed. Can we work remotely, or do we need a hybrid model? How will this impact on management practices? Do we really need office space? · A new operational contract is needed through-out the whole value chain of the industry in which we operate. We cannot assume that the modus operandi is still intact. This brings me to our ability as business leaders to develop a business which is sustainable or future fit. I am not referring to a business which is operationally sound, I am asking if you have built a business which will last into the next generation. It is stated that the average lifespan of a business in South Africa is 6 years. The are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG`s) as well as a National Development Plan (NDP) 2030. This is needed on a macro level as part of economic policy development, but can you answer the following question? “Have I identified the key elements which is unique to my business and is needed to sustain my business into the next generation?” This is where the “rubber hits the tarmac”. It should not and is not that complicated. You can get started by engaging with a knowledgeable and objective business advisory resource to guide you through the thinking and planning process. At Bright Future Consulting we use a facilitated sustainability conversation which focuses on 34 key areas within a business, addressing the 4 Pillars of Leadership, Functional Area Foundation, Outcomes and Measurements, and Employee Engagement. The outcome is a Corrective Action and Sustainability Report which identifies the critical areas of focus needing further work. The impact is measured by gauging the improvement in the likelihood that the sustainability of the business is improved. A re-calculation can save the day. An objective evaluation and total rethink can set your business up for future success for generations to come. The process starts by a single action. Engage with Jannie Rossouw at brightfuture@mweb.co.za to start the journey towards business sustainability which incorporates the uniqueness of your business.

  • From the Desk of Mxolisi Miya – SA Chamber UK KwaZulu-Natal Chapter Leader

The launch of the KZN Chapter of the South African Chamber of Commerce UK on the 14th September 2021 marked the beginning of a new era for entrepreneurs (aspiring and existing) who are committed to the development and growth of the South African Economy. The purpose of the SA Chamber Chapters is to encourage opportunity for the upliftment of all South African’s. This includes supporting socio-economic development initiatives, and drawing together quality networks of people and business, essential for impactful creation of business development ecosystems; to support creating opportunity for South African businesses to expand their operations into the United Kingdom and other relevant countries. As articulated by my colleague David White, who leads the SA Chapter of the SA Chamber of Commerce United Kingdom, in his article titled "Building Impactful Ecosystems for Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders". He says, "We need a new and better approach to supporting entrepreneurs and business leaders so they can learn essential lessons needed in business, benefit from existing knowledge and learning curves, and in turn serve communities, our nation, and the world at large with better value for consumers and better effects on our environment and global society.” In my role as KZN Chapter leader, I would like to place emphasis on serving communities, as I feel serving our people is an important responsibility of every person in our caring nation. I would like to be an example in this regard. Serving communities should not only be limited to the commercial aspects as production of goods and the selling of services for the purposes of making profits but should include caring for the communities well fair and the environment’s preservation. As a community leader I fully understand that developing and growing the economy should be for the benefit of all citizens, including for those that do not have the means or capacity to start their own businesses. It is about increasing the size of the cake for the benefit of the broader society. Being mindful of the history of our country and in particular the system of apartheid that created unequal societies, the rich and the poor, the have's and have not’s means that businesses should be aware of the benefits of empowering the impoverished communities. While I am fully aware that this responsibility lies primarily with the Government, however, the business sector also has an important role to play. It is with this in mind that the KZN Chapter of the Chamber would always actively encourage businesses to support initiatives or projects that are aimed at uplifting needy communities. A very good example of the projects that businesses can provide support in is the Esibusisweni Children's Home which is based in Kwanyuswa, KwaZulu-Natal. The home is owned and run by Elizabeth who is a pensioner with a generous heart. The name Esibusisweni means a “place of blessing” and it caters for abandoned and orphaned children. Partnership between Sibanye Africa and Magic Moments Trust has attracted support in the form of sponsorships from businesses like DRG, Robinhood Foundation, CC&A, and others. This is just one example, and no doubt there are many others, that will benefit with the support of the business community. We continue to encourage KZN Business Leaders to engage with the SA Chamber UK, particularly if there is interest in trading in new markets. We are excited to build productive, compliant, engaged, and sustainable enterprises. We are fully committed to creating and supporting an environment that encourages economic growth. Please contact me, Mxolisi Miya, SA Chamber United Kingdom KZN Chapter leader on immiya1959@gmail.com
