  • Sappi Saiccor mill expansion and environmental upgrade project lauded by President Ramaphosa

“Forward with Sappi, forward,” were the words of encouragement that the President of South Africa, His Excellency Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, had for the team from Sappi as he led the official opening of the R7.7billion expansion and environmental upgrade project at the Sappi Saiccor Mill on Tuesday, 13 September 2023. Commenting during his keynote address, following the official ribbon-cutting and plaque unveiling, the President said: “Today, we are witnessing far more than a financial investment. We are witnessing an investment in infrastructure, people, innovation, technology and sustainability. It is an investment in community development, in the local economy, in our export capacity and in the industrialisation of our economy.” During his address the President made the point that Sappi Southern Africa, one of the country’s largest users of container for exports, makes an important contribution to the country’s export revenues, and that while foreign direct investment is important for the economy, the greatest demonstration of confidence is when South African companies take that lead. He went on: “The realisation of Sappi’s investment here at Umkomaas sends the strongest signal that our home-grown multinationals are taking the lead in investing in our economy. It demonstrates confidence to other potential investors that this is indeed a favourable place to invest in and to do business,” he said. The President congratulated Sappi on staying true to and delivering on the commitment that Sappi Limited Chief Executive Officer, Mr Steve Binnie, made during the inaugural South African Investment Conference held in 2018, when the expansion project was first announced. Commenting on the investment, Sappi chairperson Sir Nigel Rudd said “Our investment here at Saiccor provides tangible confirmation in our belief that South Africa has more to offer as an export hub; has great potential to expand its forest products sector especially as a low carbon renewable resource driver of economic growth and social upliftment; and can help guide and lead Africa to develop the continent’s forest products potential.” The project will not only add 110,000 tons of capacity to the mill’s production of dissolving pulp (DP) to meet the increasing demand from global customers for natural and renewable dissolving pulp, particularly Lyocell pulp, but will also significantly reduce the mill’s environmental footprint and supports Sappi’s decarbonisation journey, whilst also generating an additional ZAR1 billion per annum in direct benefit to the KwaZulu-Natal economy. In addition, Saiccor Mill is busy with the construction of a pilot plant to produce Furfural, a biochemical extracted during the processing of timber. Used as a replacement for fossil fuel based chemicals in agriculture, foodstuffs and industrial processes, this will provide further revenue streams and export opportunities for South Africa and further underpins the country’s move to embracing low-carbon circular economy options. In her address, the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Ms Nomusa Dube-Ncube saluted Sappi on being an iconic and patriotic business and expressed gratitude that Sappi was part of the radical socio-economic transformation programme in the province, focused on the localisation of goods and services and the employment of local residents. Commenting on the expansion project she said: “It represents not just a vote of confidence in the people of KwaZulu-Natal as a rising province, but it also has a knock-on effect for other companies to benefit from the emerging opportunities.” Echoing these sentiments, Mr Ebrahim Patel, Minister of Trade and Industry and Competition pointed out that the challenge with development was for it to focus on parts of the country and communities that are marginalised and not in the economic mainstream. According to him, the Sappi Saiccor expansion meets this challenge, saying “it’s at the heart of what development is all about. It supports the government’s rural economic development strategy; it connects local communities to global value chains.” Steve Binnie, CEO of Sappi Limited, illustrated how this was achieved by saying: “We are pleased that this project opens the way for the many forestry value chain participants that benefit as part of the eco-system. Sappi sees itself as an anchor tenant and proud role-player in the rural landscape of our country, leading the way in the multibillion Rand forestry industry and in responsible forestry management with its dual-certified FSC and PEFC plantations. We are thankful that this project helps us to ‘open the way’ to achieve our ambitious Thrive 25 purpose of moving toward a more circular economy by reducing and replacing the need for fossil-based products by using renewable and sustainable wood to produce innovative biobased products. Not only for our own benefit, but for the benefit of our country, its people, and for the planet at large.” The event - witnessed by invited guests including government dignitaries, traditional leaders, community members, industry and business representatives and Sappi management and staff - was a fitting testament to the hard work that the project team put into this mammoth project over the past four years. • A Successful Clean-Up and Recycle SA Week 2022!

South Africans can celebrate another successful Clean-Up and Recycle Week (12-17 September 2022) as thousands of kilogrammes of waste were removed from our natural spaces this past week. According to Douw Steyn, Sustainability Director at Plastics SA, literally hundreds of clean-up events took place around South Africa in an effort to keep our environment clean, with many more initiatives continuing to take place over the coming weeks. “Clean-Up and Recycle Week 2022 was action-packed, and it was wonderful to see the large number of volunteers signing up for clean-ups at beaches, rivers, and streams and in communities around the country. Our sincere gratitude goes out to all the coordinators who worked tirelessly to ensure that everything ran smoothly on the day; the many sponsors who contributed either financially or with products to this year’s clean-up efforts, and every South African who freely and willingly gave of their time and energy to make a difference, by removing visible litter from the environment,” he said. Highlights of this year’s Clean-Up & Recycle SA Week included River Clean-Up Day, which took place on Wednesday, 14 September, National Recycling Day which took place on Friday, 16 September, and the International Coastal Clean-Up and World Clean-up Days both falling on Saturday, 17 September. These incredible days united over 180 countries across the world for a cleaner planet as volunteers and organisations took to cleaning every space imaginable - including divers who went deep-sea litter hunting! Douw especially thanked Plastics SA’s Sustainability Manager, John Kieser, who has been the Cape Provinces coordinator and one of the founder members of the South African International Coastal Clean-Up for the past 27 years. Plastics SA’s work is not finished yet, as the completed audit sheets now need to be compiled, processed, and analysed to produce a final report about South Africa’s participation in this year’s events, as well as a snapshot of the waste found on our beaches and waterways. “We want to encourage communities to continue with their efforts to keep their communities clean. Every South African can make a difference every day by picking up litter and ensuring that they recycle. Small, consistent efforts make a huge difference if everybody does it. Together we can turn the tide on litter in our country!” Douw concludes. For more information, please visit www.cleanupandrecycle.co.za or www.plasticsinfo.co.za

  • TWIMS Manufacturing Ambassador Scholarship

TWIMS understands the issues facing South African-based manufacturers and is proud to be able to offer financial assistance to those who would otherwise not be able to pursue an MBA (manufacturing focus). The Manufacturing Ambassador Scholarship is aimed at providing future leaders with the opportunity to develop their skills and capabilities, thereby contributing to the development of South African industry, whilst ensuring broad representation of our country’s communities. Think you have what it takes? TWIMS is acutely aware of the complex operating environment facing South African based manufacturers and acknowledges that many deserving individuals are unable to pursue the GIBS MBA (manufacturing focus) due to financial constraints. In response to this challenge, TWIMS is honoured to announce that it is now able to offer such individuals the opportunity to apply for the Manufacturing Ambassador Scholarship. As the result of a generous endowment from the Toyota South Africa Educational Trust, TWIMS will be able to fund up to 20 Manufacturing Ambassador scholarships annually from 2021. The scholarships will cover up to 50% of the PGDip and up to 70% of the MBA student tuition, global module expenses, and residency costs at TWIMS during block release and exam periods. Ambassador Scholarship qualification criteria The Manufacturing Ambassador Scholarships are open to all South Africans interested in manufacturing or related industries. Manufacturing Ambassador Scholarships will only be granted to fully deserving candidates of exceptional talent, and with a demonstrated, deep commitment to African industrialisation. Prospective students must first apply to GIBS for admission to the MBA (manufacturing focus). This process is completely independent of TWIMS. The cost of application is entirely for the applicant’s own account and will not be reimbursed by TWIMS. The application is therefore entirely at the risk of the prospective student. 2. Once prospective students have applied to GIBS for entry into the MBA (manufacturing focus) they must complete the TWIMS Ambassador Scholarship application process. This will be done via the TWIMS Ambassador Scholarship portal here 3. The application process requires the submission of the following documents: A curriculum vitae, including details of outreach and volunteer work (maximum of two pages) A motivational letter, indicating why the scholarship has been applied for (500 words) An industrialisation essay outlining your view of the most significant disruptor to manufacturing in Africa in the next decade, and the role of management in leading through the advent of this disruption (1,000 words) All scholarships applications received will be reviewed by an adjudication committee and the shortlisted candidates may be called in for a follow-up interview. The selection of the final scholarship recipients is based on four underpinning requirements which are as follows: GIBS scores (40% weighting), CV (20%), motivation letter (20%) and Industrialisation essay (20%). • TWIMS - Why Should I do a Manufacturing Focused MBA?

Why should I do an MBA? This is a question business leaders across the globe regularly consider. A worthwhile MBA degree requires a serious investment of time and money but should provide significant tangible and intangible benefits for the rest of your career. Here are some of the top reasons to pursue an MBA: ● Develop your leadership skills ● Build your network with other industry leaders ● Upskill yourself in core business sectors such as marketing, finance, HR and operations ● Learn how to build a sustainable competitive advantage If I choose to do an MBA, why should I choose a manufacturing focus? The manufacturing industry is complex, global and far-reaching. The value chain for a manufacturer includes suppliers, financial institutions, logistics, government and public service providers and customers. If your career exists within the manufacturing eco-system then the GIBS Manufacturing Focused MBA at TWIMS is explicitly designed for you. The GIBS Manufacturing Focused MBA Developed as a partnership between TWIMS and GIBS (Africa’s #1 MBA provider), this specialised MBA is Africa’s first and only to focus on the manufacturing industry. The 18-month programme is comprised of a PGDip and MBA. Students who received 60% and above for the PGDip year graduate to the MBA, which comprises 3 core sections; 1. In-class electives, 2. The Global Module, 3. A thesis. Our electives are manufacturing-specific and cover some of the most relevant topics in today’s manufacturing environment. Current MBA electives: ● Future of Manufacturing ● Sustainable Finance ● Green Manufacturing ● Inclusive Leadership ● Africa Trade ● Lean Supply Chain Management ● Lean Operations Management The global module sees students embark on a group overseas excursion to learn how global manufacturers are tackling pertinent issues. Our partnerships with manufacturers in Asia, Africa and Europe offer students an opportunity to learn from some of the most well-respected and diverse manufacturers globally. Finally, students must complete a research-based thesis of their choice before being awarded their MBA. To ensure both academic rigour and real-world application, all students are partnered with an academic advisor and experienced industry leader who will provide guidance based on their decades of experience and learning. How the programme is structured In year 1, PGDip lectures take place on the TWIMS campus in Kloof, Durban, during 4 block release periods. The block is between 7-10 days, including weekends. Additionally, there are 2 exam periods of 4 days each. The MBA electives are also taught in block release periods, which vary in length and frequency depending on your selected subjects. The thesis does not require on-campus attendance and meetings with supervisors can take place online. The GIBS Manufacturing Focused MBA is an academically rigorous degree designed to challenge and upskill students. If you consider your future to be within the wide manufacturing industry, there is no better way to ensure you are adequately prepared to lead with confidence. https://twimsafrica.com
