  • Practical tips to tackle rising fuel costs

By: Dean Horn | Managing Director of Super Tyres South African motorists are bracing for a significant increase in fuel prices this April, with 95-octane petrol expected to rise by approximately R4.74 per litre and diesel by more than R7.70 per litre. The sharp increases are being driven by a combination of global oil price pressures linked to conflict in the Middle East, a weaker rand, and additional fuel levies coming into effect at the start of the month. With petrol prices set to push beyond R25 per litre in some areas, many households will feel the strain. However, small changes in driving habits and vehicle maintenance can make a meaningful difference over time. “Fuel price hikes of this scale place real pressure on consumers, but there are practical steps motorists can take to reduce their fuel consumption and manage costs more effectively,” says Dean Horn, Managing Director of Super Tyres. 1. Keep your vehicle well maintained A poorly maintained vehicle can significantly increase fuel consumption. Regularly servicing components such as spark plugs, filters and engine oil helps ensure optimal performance and efficiency. 2. Check tyre pressure regularly Incorrect tyre pressure increases rolling resistance, forcing your vehicle to use more fuel. Ensuring tyres are properly inflated can improve fuel efficiency and extend tyre lifespan. “Tyres play a bigger role in fuel consumption than many people realise. Even slightly underinflated tyres can lead to unnecessary fuel usage over time,” Horn explains. 3. Ensure proper wheel alignment Misaligned wheels create additional drag, which increases fuel consumption. Regular alignment checks not only improve efficiency but also enhance overall vehicle handling and safety. 4. Drive smoothly and avoid harsh acceleration Aggressive driving habits such as rapid acceleration and hard braking can quickly increase fuel usage. Maintaining a steady speed and anticipating traffic conditions helps reduce unnecessary fuel burn. 5. Reduce unnecessary weight and drag Carrying heavy loads or driving with roof racks and open windows increases wind resistance and fuel consumption. Removing unused items from your vehicle can improve efficiency, especially on longer trips. 6. Plan and combine trips Short trips with a cold engine use more fuel. Combining errands into one journey allows your engine to operate more efficiently and reduces overall fuel consumption. “Motorists often underestimate how much these small adjustments can add up. Improving fuel efficiency by even 15% to 20% can translate into significant savings over the course of a month,” adds Horn. With fuel costs expected to remain volatile, taking a proactive approach to vehicle care and driving habits can help consumers better manage the impact on their monthly budgets. For added peace of mind, motorists are encouraged to have their tyres and shocks checked by a trusted professional to ensure both safety and efficiency on the road. Tips to help you during rising fuel costs

  • Easter Dining Reaches Unprecedented Heights with Beanbag Jazz Lounge’s Signature Recipe

By: Noma Mdiniso | PR Assistant - RELIABLE PR Durban, South Africa - As Easter approaches, the search for spaces that offer more than just a meal becomes increasingly intentional. This year, Beanbag Jazz Lounge stands out not only for its refined dining experience, but for the young culinary talent shaping its kitchen. At just 24 years old and originally from Ntuzuma, Nqobile Mabaso - Head Chef at Beanbag Jazz Lounge is redefining what it means to lead a kitchen in one of Durban’s most sophisticated dining environments. Her presence signals a shift - one where youthful perspective meets culinary discipline, and where tradition is approached with both care and confidence. Easter is, at its core, about gathering - and Beanbag Jazz Lounge leans into this with an approach that prioritises shared experiences over excess. Here, dining is unhurried, music is intentional, and the atmosphere encourages connection. Central to this offering is Chef Mabaso’s Easter-inspired menu, led by her signature herb and garlic roasted leg of lamb - a dish that reflects both tradition and her philosophy as a chef. “From my perspective as a chef, the key to achieving the perfect flavour in a leg of lamb is respecting the simplicity of the ingredients and allowing the natural character of the meat to shine,”  she explains. Her approach is rooted in patience and technique: “Allowing the lamb to marinate properly, roasting it at the right temperature, and most importantly letting it rest before carving makes a significant difference. It’s about taking the time to get every element right.” For Mabaso, the significance of the dish extends beyond the kitchen: “A leg of lamb served during Easter is more than just a dish - it’s a symbol of tradition, comfort, and bringing people together. • Digital Dominance in KwaZulu-Natal's Business Ecosystem for Strategic Growth

KwaZulu-Natal stands at a crossroads where traditional industries meet a fast-growing digital economy. This blend creates a unique environment for businesses to thrive, especially through platforms that enhance visibility and credibility. One such platform is the KZN Top Business Portfolio, known as "The List." Since 1998, it has transformed from a simple directory into a powerful digital tool that helps companies build authority, attract customers, and grow in a competitive market. Understanding how this digital ecosystem works and why it matters is key for any business aiming to succeed in KwaZulu-Natal’s dynamic economy. This post explores the economic foundations of the region, the evolution of "The List," and practical ways businesses can use digital presence to drive growth. One such platform is the KZN Top Business , known as "The List." The Economic Backbone of KwaZulu-Natal KwaZulu-Natal contributes about 16% to South Africa’s GDP, making it a vital economic hub. Its strategic location includes two major ports: Durban and Richards Bay. Together, these ports handle nearly 60% of the country’s cargo tonnage. This makes the province a key gateway for trade within the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The high volume of trade creates a fast-moving market where businesses must quickly find reliable partners and investors. Local companies benefit from being part of trusted networks that offer visibility and credibility. International investors look for vetted entry points to reduce risks and identify opportunities. Several provincial strategies guide economic growth, including the Provincial Growth and Development Strategy (PGDS). These frameworks focus on improving infrastructure, supporting exports, and encouraging innovation. Digital platforms like "The List" align with these goals by helping businesses connect and compete effectively. The Evolution of "The List" as a Digital Powerhouse Originally launched as an annual printed Publication, "The List" has grown into a multi-dimensional digital platform. It combines several elements that work together to boost business visibility: High-authority web presence: Companies listed on the platform benefit from strong search engine rankings. This means potential customers and partners find them more easily online. Video storytelling: Businesses can share their stories through videos, making their brand more relatable and memorable. Social proof through awards: The platform includes a prestigious awards system that recognizes excellence. Winning or being nominated adds credibility and trust. This evolution reflects the changing ways people discover and evaluate businesses. Search engines and artificial intelligence now play a major role in business discovery. Being part of "The List" is no longer just about branding; it is a strategic move to meet the demands of modern algorithms and customer expectations. Why Digital Presence Matters in KwaZulu-Natal The digital transformation in KwaZulu-Natal is reshaping how companies compete. Here are some reasons why a strong digital presence is essential: Improved discoverability: With many businesses vying for attention, appearing on trusted platforms increases the chances of being found by the right audience. Building trust: Online reviews, awards, and verified listings help build confidence among customers and partners. Access to new markets: Digital platforms open doors to regional and international markets by showcasing businesses to a wider audience. Data-driven decisions: Digital tools provide insights into customer behavior and market trends, helping businesses adapt and grow. For example, a manufacturing company in Durban that joined "The List" saw a 30% increase in inquiries from new clients within six months. The company used video content to explain its processes and highlighted its award-winning quality standards. This combination helped it stand out in a crowded market. Practical Steps for Businesses to Harness Digital Dominance Businesses in KwaZulu-Natal can take several practical steps to benefit from the digital ecosystem: Join trusted platforms: Register with recognized directories like the KwaZulu-Natal Top Business Portfolio to gain visibility and credibility. Create engaging content: Use videos and stories to connect with customers on a personal level. Seek recognition: Apply for awards and certifications that demonstrate quality and reliability. Optimize for search engines: Ensure your website and profiles use relevant keywords and clear information to improve search rankings. Leverage data: Use analytics tools to understand customer preferences and adjust marketing strategies accordingly. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can especially benefit by focusing on local SEO and storytelling. For instance, a local food producer in Richards Bay used video testimonials from customers and highlighted its sustainable practices. This approach attracted new buyers and helped the company expand into neighboring provinces. The Role of Innovation and Collaboration Digital dominance is not just about individual businesses but also about how they collaborate within the ecosystem. KwaZulu-Natal encourages partnerships between companies, government agencies, and research institutions. These collaborations foster innovation and create new opportunities. For example, logistics firms working closely with port authorities and tech startups have developed digital tracking systems that improve cargo handling efficiency. Such innovations strengthen the region’s position as a trade hub and create competitive advantages for local businesses. Looking Ahead: The Future of Business in KwaZulu-Natal The digital transformation in KwaZulu-Natal is accelerating. Artificial intelligence and machine learning are becoming more important in business discovery and customer engagement. Companies that invest in digital tools and platforms will be better positioned to adapt to changing market conditions. The KZN Top Business Portfolio will likely continue evolving, integrating new technologies and expanding its reach. Businesses that embrace this shift will find new ways to grow, connect, and compete both locally and internationally. Building a strong digital presence in KwaZulu-Natal is no longer optional. It is a strategic move that aligns with the province’s economic strengths and future growth plans. By joining trusted platforms, creating engaging content, and collaborating within the ecosystem, businesses can unlock new opportunities and secure their place in a competitive market. • The Strategic Value of the KZN Top Business Awards

The Strategic Value of the KZN Top Business Awards An Analysis of Immediate Impact and Long-Term Business Growth Entering the KZN Top Business Awards  (currently brought to you by Standard Bank and the Women of Africa Group) is far more than a quest for a trophy; it is a strategic marketing, public relations, and operational exercise. With zero cost to enter , the barrier to entry is eliminated, leaving only the potential for high-yield returns. Why Enter?  It forces a company to audit its successes against rigorous standards (including King V principles) and articulate its value proposition clearly. Immediate Benefits:  Entering generates immediate brand awareness, boosts internal employee morale, and places your leadership team in a curated network of the province's top decision-makers. Future Benefits:  Going forward, recognition builds immense brand equity, creates powerful digital authority for SEO and AI search engines, attracts top-tier talent, and signals stability to future investors and B2B partners. Part 1: The Strategic Imperative – Why Enter? 1. Zero Financial Risk, High Reward Unlike many industry awards that require exorbitant entry or table fees just to be considered, the KZN Top Business Awards are explicitly free to enter . Internal Auditing and Benchmarking The application process itself is highly valuable. Broad Category Alignment The awards are not one-size-fits-all. They cater to the specific strengths of a business. Whether a company excels in Renewable Efficiency (Green Initiatives) , Community Upliftment , Employee Wellness , or is a Stand-out Family Business , there is a platform designed to highlight that specific operational excellence. Many competing sites have less frequent updates or more generic content, which affects their rankings. These links boost the site’s authority and trustworthiness in the eyes of search engines. Other KZN sites often have fewer or lower-quality backlinks, limiting their SEO strength.
