  • KZN North Coast - The era of Luxury estates

By: Dylan Naidoo In my previous editorial, I talked about the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, citing numerous opportunities for potential investors as well as providing statistics that back up investment potential. However, that makes up one half of the story. While the KZN North Coast falls in the higher end of the market, that does not discredit potential investment opportunities taking place. Two major estates are shaping the KZN North Coast that provide a golden opportunity for investors: the Seaton Estate and Zimbali Estate.   Zimbali Estate The Zimabli Estate is a new project has an aim for 2030, dubbed the “Zimbali Vision 2030”. The project is estimated to take 20 years in development, with an estimated R50 billion rand in construction. The coming project aims to shape the KZN North Coast in “how we imagine sustainable coastal, countryside, and lifestyle living could come together — balancing growth with environmental responsibility, economic opportunity, and lasting community impact,” according to the Zimabli Lakes website .   Their website includes a list of benefits that this venture potentially brings, including the creation of 40 000 direct and indirect jobs over time, skills development and training programs and long-term investment in community upliftment. The estate aims to provide many ecological benefits, considering its proximity to the coastline. More benefits include improving the water quality and pollution control in the area, and ongoing engagement with municipal and environmental policies. The Estate is not the only construction planned for Zimabli, included is the construction of a marina, aimed at attracting tourism and integrating coastal related activities, such as fishing or commercial activity. Overall, the Zimabli Estate and Marina is a promising investment opportunity for both investors and people searching for a more upclass coastal lifestyle.   Seaton Estate In its current form, the Seaton Estate is a platform to purchase premium land with a focus on nature driven living. Essentially, Seaton aims to restore natural biomes in conjunction with property that enhances a person’s lifestyle. In fact, the Seaton Estate has a broad focus on nature-like living, including family walking trails, lunar decks and open valleys. Seaton is also home to many other exciting opportunities and activities. The clubhouse includes  a kids area, a central gathering space for social interaction, as well as facilities for sports and other outdoor activities. Overall, for the outdoor lovers and those that want that coastal-nature like lifestyle, the Seaton Estate provides a luxurious experience that appeals to lifestyle buyers.   The KZN North Coast is slowly developing into a great hotspot for that luxurious lifestyle that many people strive for. As such, it makes a perfect spot for both lifestyle buyers and investors, considering the continuous development of the Zimbali and Seaton Estates. KZN North Coast. Image Source here

  • Catch up with Friends and Family at The Talkhouse

By: Dylan Naidoo The Talkhouse is a café /bistro situated outside of the Westville Mall with a familiar atmosphere. Even though I went there for the first time, The Talkhouse gave me a sense of nostalgia for café that I used to visit as a child. Going as a family or as a group of friends, catching up after school sports games, or just hanging out and meeting new people are fond memories. This may be my experience with café, but The Talkhouse definitely caters to a wide group of people coming in for a chat, as the name suggests.   When I first arrived at the venue, one aspect that first struck me was the layout. There was a mixed layout of couches for the friend or family groups, then your standard chairs and tables for more interpersonal communication. The layout was great, and I really liked how everything was organised. The place was set up perfectly for large friend or family groups to sit right down and engage in long conversations.   A great café /bistro cannot be analysed before talking about the great minds behind the place, cousins Rochelle and Letaria. As of August 2024, Rochelle and Letaria took over as the new owners of The Talkhouse, becoming business partners. In fact, the idea to take ownership was a happy coincidence. As the story goes, both Rochelle and Letaria went for lunch at the establishment, and Letaria began talking to the owner, mentioning she knew the previous owners. They jokingly mentioned that if the owner was ever selling the business, they would be the first buyers. Surprisingly, the previous owner was thinking of selling The Talkhouse, and as they say, the rest is history. I was quite curious about why Rochelle and Letaria wanted to become owners of the café, and their answer surprised me again. Both Rochelle and Letaria were already business minded individuals, and so running The Talkhouse would not be their first business outing.   When asked about The Talkhouse itself, Letaria mentions that she does not see The Talkhouse as much of a café anymore, but as a bistro due to expanding to serving not only breakfast and lunch but dinner once a month with a special menu. They mention that whether it be breakfast, lunch or even brunch, you can always come through to have a wholesome meal that fills you up.   The Talkhouse stands out by mentioning that one of their key areas of focus is quality. Both Letaria and Rochelle care about the quality of food they bring to the table. On top of this, they care about the relationship dynamic between the customer and the business owner. Instead of a franchise whereby the customer may not even meet the owner, The Talkhouse differs by having that owner and customer interaction. Essentially, having that bond with the customer means knowing when their next birthday is, or their next event, or knowing their regulars by name. This aspect is even in their slogan: Where friends become family.   Letaria and Rochelle also mentioned that having great staff is an important aspect for them and strive to create a family dynamic with their staff.   Social media presence has been a staple of The Talkhouse since Rochelle and Letaria took over, and they have been widening their reach on a variety of social media platforms.   So, to the next people visiting the Westville Mall, I would highly recommend checking out The Talkhouse. Depending on what your tastebuds are asking for, The Talkhouse has you covered from butter chicken to pasta, amazing cakes and great coffee. Most importantly, you are going to a place that appreciates you as part of the family rather than a customer. What are you waiting for? Visit The Talkhouse at Westville Mall, 35 Buckingham Tce. • Durban Film City: The latest update from the eThekwini Municipality has just been released

By: Dylan Naidoo In the latest draft annual report by the eThekwini Municipality, new information has surfaced regarding the R7.5 billion Durban Film City project by film producer Anant Singh. After many years of delays, some work on the project has begun, with framework plans being finalised and pending approval from the municipality.   The Man behind Durban Film City Durban Film City is a planned film studio headed by Anant Singh, chief executive officer (CEO) of Videovision and film producer of many South African films such as Mr Bones  and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Singh is also one of our KZN Top Business Leaders, winning our 2016 KZN Top Business Personality  of the Year Award. Starting from the young age of 18, Singh entered the film industry, committed to pursuing his dream, and began flying overseas to develop business contacts. Many of the people still work with Anant to this day. His movie, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom starring A-list actor Idris Alba as Nelson Mandela, has gained critical acclaim both nationally and internationally. To learn more about Anant Singh and his life, click here .   Newest developments to Durban Film City It would come as no surprise then that Anant Singh would be opening his own film studio here in Durban, dubbed “Durban Film City”. Singh began negotiations to build his studio back in 2003 . The site was previously the military base of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). Since then, numerous delays have affected the confidence in construction of the studio. However, the new draft annual report may regain confidence in the project.   The Durban Film City project is labelled as a “Catalyst Project”, which is a project where the planning and infrastructure of the development is over R500 million. The development of Durban Film City has crossed R7.5 billion but is expected to bring numerous benefits, including: ●      An estimated 50 000 temporary jobs ●      An estimated 4300 permanent jobs. ●      Established as a world-class film studio that can attract tourism and leisure activities.   Construction Challenges As previously mentioned, the site used to be owned by the SANDF but was rezoned and transferred in 2022 to Singh. That being said, the building plans are being finalised and approval from the municipality is still pending. As reported by Thami Magubane from IOL , rates have been highlighted as a significant issue for development. A statement from Singh also displays concerns in another issue: “The provision of bulk services is also a challenge, but we are hopeful that these issues will be resolved.” However, Singh has been working with the municipality to resolve these issues.   The Durban Film City project is an attractive prospect for both experienced, young and aspiring film professionals alike. It will provide a place that honours Durban as a hotspot for film making, and with the potential creation of new jobs, the film studio should be an exciting prospect for people that want to join the film industry.   To view the entire draft annual eThekwini Municipality 2024-2025 report, click here .
