  • ATTRACTING ATTENTION IN STYLE

Grant Adlam CEO, Influencer and Triathlete Over the past few weeks, I have been enjoying the driving pleasure of a large variety of cars. The last two both have noticeable features that make them stand out on the road and attracted attention wherever I travelled. The GAC GS3 Emzoom 1.5T R-Style is truly impressive. When it arrived in my driveway, its unique blue colour scheme with orange accents made me think, "Wow, this looks sporty." And it really is. Once you press the accelerator and switch to sport mode, you need to hold on to your seat belt. It takes off instantly. When I took the Emzoom to the print shop to pick up books or delivered items for a businesswoman, everyone stepped outside to have a look. It's definitely eye-catching. The same thing happened at the framing shop. As soon as it arrived, the entire workshop came out to see it. At the KZN Top Business Women event at the Radisson Durban Umhlanga Hotel, the video crew and technical team were drawn to it. When I arrived at the loading zone at the back of the Radisson, the roar of this impressive car caught everyone's attention, and all the young people had to come and check it out. It was an immediate hit. My wife Gayle and I visited the Berg and stayed at The Cavern for the weekend. Despite the heavy rain, it turned out to be a fantastic weekend. Upon our arrival, Gayle was absolutely thrilled. We had an unexpected guest leading a guided walk on wildflowers; none other than Elsa Pooley, a botanical artist and practicing botanist with over 40 years of experience in the field. But let's not get sidetracked from the vehicle... when we returned to the car, guess what? Everyone who passed by the car stopped to admire it; it was a conversation starter. And just to remind you, these conversations took place in the pouring rain All in all, the GAC GS3 Emzoom 1.5T R-Style is a super bold-looking, packed-with-features compact crossover that gives you awesome bang for your buck. It grabs the attention of both older and younger drivers, and if you're hunting for a stylish, smart ride, it's a total joy to drive and I was sad when it was collected. The next car I drove was equally of interest. The GWM Tank 300 (2AT 4WD) diesel has a totally different look and feel but also immediately grabbed attention. At the weekly family dinner, the men were very quick to gather around the car, climb in to have a closer look at the interior and to offer their opinions. Here was a car they would be delighted to own! They praised its comfortable interior space, which offers a vast array of features often found in much more expensive vehicles. These include a fully integrated 2.3-inch touchscreen, Nappa leather, heated/ventilated/massaging seats, and a full safety suite. The analogue clock was a special touch. The Tank 300 provided a smooth quiet ride which handled well on my daily drives around town to visit clients – both on the open roads and in traffic. I enjoyed the manoeuvrability and the ease with which I could park at the gym. In addition, the Tank 300 is considered a highly capable and value-for-money off-roader in the adventure SUV segment. The 3-tonne braked towing capacity, making it suitable for families and adventurers. This was another car I was sorry to see leave my driveway. • EaziSoak: The Game-Changing Soakaway Solution You’ve Been Waiting For

Managing effluent, groundwater, or stormwater shouldn’t be costly, complicated, or unreliable. Yet traditional soakaway systems often rely on geotextile fabric, stone layers, and perforated pipes—materials that increase installation time, drive up costs, and offer limited long-term performance. These older systems can struggle under demanding conditions such as high water tables, heavy rainfall, or poor soil structure, making them less effective and more prone to maintenance issues. The EaziSoak system changes all of that. Designed as a revolutionary plug-and-play solution, EaziSoak replaces the need for the traditional components of a soakaway with a modern modular chamber system. This innovative design creates a much larger percolation area, allowing water to disperse more efficiently into the surrounding soil. The result is a system that consistently outperforms conventional methods in both performance and reliability. One of the standout advantages of EaziSoak is the ease of installation. Its lightweight, modular structure eliminates the need for heavy machinery, specialised tools, or complex preparation. Installations become faster, simpler, and far more cost-effective, without compromising on durability or quality. Because the chambers are engineered to maintain structural integrity under pressure, the long-term reliability of the system is vastly improved, offering peace of mind for both residential and commercial projects. EaziSoak’s versatility also sets it apart. It works exceptionally well for dispersing effluent from septic tanks, providing a solution that is both efficient and dependable. When installed behind retaining walls, it helps reduce groundwater pressure and supports structural stability. The system is equally effective as part of a stormwater management strategy, helping to control excess rainwater and prevent flooding. In every application, EaziSoak delivers a smarter, more efficient way to manage water. It simplifies installation, reduces costs, and enhances performance—making it a true game changer in the industry. If you’re looking for a modern solution that outperforms traditional soakaway systems on every level, look no further than EaziSoak. • Legacy in Motion: Rethinking Leadership for a Multi-Generational Future in South Africa

In South Africa’s rapidly evolving business landscape, fewer than 30% of family-owned businesses successfully transition to the second generation, and only a small fraction makes it to the third. Beekman Group stands out as a rare example of what long-term leadership, vision and shared values can achieve. More than 50 years after its beginnings in KwaZulu-Natal, the Group has grown into one of the region’s most trusted names in hospitality and property development, managing more than 40 resorts across Southern Africa and Australasia. Its story shows how legacy can thrive when it evolves with intention. A Legacy Built on Values That Continue to Guide the Way Beekman Group’s  longevity is rooted in a leadership approach that treats its founding principles  of integrity, innovation and family as a framework for growth rather than something fixed in time. As the business expanded, new generations adapted these values to changing markets, emerging technologies and modern traveller expectations. This balance between tradition and transformation has helped the company maintain its reputation as a reliable force in KwaZulu-Natal’s business community. “True legacy leadership is about building something that outlives you, not by standing still but by evolving with purpose,” says Fiona Broom, Group Executive at Beekman Group. “Each generation must ask what our founding spirit means today. For us, that means embracing innovation to expand our impact, using technology to open new opportunities, and creating workplaces where people can grow. Legacy is not defined by what we keep, but by what we continue to grow.” Supporting Growth in the Tourism Sector Over the decades, the Group has shifted from a pioneering presence in the timeshare market to a modern hospitality leader. This evolution reflects a strong understanding of changing traveller needs and the growing interest in high-quality, experience-led holidays. This commitment to growth is evident in The Holiday Club’s recent celebration of its 10 millionth guest  sent on holiday, a milestone that speaks to the Beekman Group’s consistent expansion and enduring impact on the industry. With over 1 400 employees , the organisation contributes meaningfully to the tourism sector, a vital part of South Africa’s economy. Approximately 40% of the Group’s resorts are located in KwaZulu-Natal, where tourism plays an important role in job creation and regional development. Through responsible development and community upliftment initiatives, the Group continues to support growth in the areas where it operates. Family Leadership That Inspires Stability and Progress Beyond its strong commercial performance, the Beekman Group is defined by its KZN family roots and the warmth that comes with being a family-owned business. This leadership style creates a culture built on trust, authenticity and genuine care. The leadership team  includes John Beekman, Managing Director, and Directors Cindy Allan (nee Beekman), Wayne Beekman and Neville Beekman. They blend respect for the Group’s origins with a forward-looking mindset that encourages stability, innovation and collaboration, while staying true to the values the company was built on. This sense of family naturally extends to employees and guests. It is a people-first leadership style that reflects the resilience and long-term vision admired across KZN businesses. Shaping a Future-Focused Business for the Province The Beekman Group views leadership as a relay, where each generation builds on the foundation left by the previous one. Today, the company is focused on continued innovation, sustainability and inclusive leadership, all of which support both its own growth and the economic activity surrounding its resorts and developments. As the organisation plans for the future, one belief continues to guide its journey. The greatest contribution one generation can make is to leave a foundation strong enough to support the next. Legacy is not a monument to the past. It is a movement toward the future. Learn more about the Beekman Group ’s continued impact, leadership and contribution to business growth in KwaZulu-Natal.

  • Ocean Driven Media-Recap of the Latest Projects

A Snapshot of Our Recent Work We love what we do and one of the reasons why is because we have such diversity in our work, from capturing factories and machinery to conferences to luxury golf estates to safety equipment to annual awards ceremonies.  They all keep us inspired and  all provide particular challenges that we have to adapt to.  Here is some of the work that we have encountered over the last month or two. Elev8 Tour Element8 went on a tour around South Africa showcasing their latest technology and sharing success stories of some of their clients. Their automation technology that is used in various manufacturing industries is remarkable and can help improve on production; reduce stopages and breakdowns as well as upscale production. This was the first time that it has been held in Durban and it was impressive to see so many guests attending.  We covered the Durban leg with photography as well as filming the case studies and awards.  The brief was quite simple with just capturing guests networking; the speakers on stage; awards; and general atmosphere at the event including as much branding as possible.  Toyota Boshoku We really enjoy working at Toyota Boshoku  as the staff are so friendly and hospitable which makes it easy to just get on with the job and get it done.  This time we had to photograph their new Engel Injection Moulding Machines that had just been installed and are almost ready to go online and start with production.  I thoroughly enjoy photographing factories and machinery as they pose a challenge to make look good and nothing beats a good challenge.  The hardest part was just arriving with all the correct PPE the rest was easy.  Market Systems Symposium The  Market Systems Symposium  held at the Durban ICC brought together thinkers and doers from around the world to talk about how to build stronger, fairer economies. We were there to photograph and film the conversations, the energy, and those small, spontaneous moments that make big events feel personal. This 3 day event was so well organised and the creative use of one hall was imaginative and actually made each day go by so quickly.   KZN Master Builders Annual Awards Next came the  KZN Master Builders Annual Awards , celebrating the people who quite literally build our communities. This has got to be one of the most thought out events each year as every possible detail is thought of and they pride themselves in a smooth running event.  By the end of the evening you cannot feel proud of living in KZN and feeling positive about the future as you get to see all the massive projects that are taking place. Zimbali Lakes At  Zimbali Lakes , our brief this time was to film and photograph the golf course; housing developments; activities and general setups for their upcoming summer promotions.  This golf course is spectacular and it is such a treat to work there and help market this jewel on the KZN north coast. Talarify in Cape Town Down in Cape Town at the beautiful UCT, we joined  Talarify , a team doing amazing work in tech education for the inaugural Research Software Symposium. We have been working with Anelda, who runs Talarify, for a number of years when she was working for another company so even though it was an extra cost to have our team travel to Cape Town, she insisted on using us.  That was a huge honour and we made sure that we lived up to our promises and exceeded her expectations.  We documented workshops and learning sessions that were all about empowerment through digital skills. The genuine enthusiasm of everyone involved made for honest, uplifting storytelling. Tropic Plastics The shoot for  Tropic Plastics  was through a colleague and I jumped at the opportunity as I love photographing factories. They may be hot, a little dirty and unpolished in certain areas but that just poses more of a challenge and a deep desire to turn all of that into beautiful images that can be used for marketing.  Of course you also learn about all kinds of processes and how things are actually made so that is always an added bonus. This factory was no different and full of exciting and wondrous machines that I found myself staring at for ages trying to figure out how they work.  Always a treat to photograph a factory. South African Agricultural Awards The  South African Agricultural Awards  were a celebration of hard work and growth — quite literally. Farmers, producers, and agri-leaders from across the country came together to honour dedication and innovation in the sector. Our coverage focused on the pride, the grit, and the sense of shared purpose that connects everyone in agriculture.  What is so inspiring about these awards is that it is not about the biggest farmer in the country, but it includes small scale farming and recognises the work of everyone.  They all contribute to our economy and our food security. • Keep sustainable investment top of mind, Tyson Properties advisesas Reserve Bank makes another rate cut

The decision by the South African Reserve Bank Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to cut interest rates by 25-basis-points from 7% to 6.75% has been welcomed by Tyson Properties CEO, Chris Tyson.  He says that although 2025 has been a turbulent one for the economy as a whole, a cumulation of smaller interest rates since September 2024 has added up to good news for the property sector. With cuts now reaching the 150-basis point mark, he believes that this could continue to have a positive impact on the entire property sector going forward into 2026.  Tyson’s optimism is not only based on interest rates, however.  He is encouraged by the creation of a new inflation target at 3% which immediately replaces the previous target range of between 3 and 6%. This will apply over the next two years and is expected to not only decrease inflation expectations but create room for lower interest rates. This supports household spending and business investment, boosting economic growth and job creation.   The second is a cautiously optimistic Mid-term Budget which forecasted real GDP growth of 1.2 per cent for 2025, more than double the economic growth in 2024. Moreover, this recovery is expected to see further growth over the medium term at an average 1.8 per cent between 2026 and 2028.  This could be a signal for property investors sitting on the fence to enter the market. He says that, since the end of 2024, there has been a cautious revitalisation within the residential property sector, especially in the lower and mid-value segments of the market where affordability gains from lower interest rates are most pronounced. The promise of further interest rate cuts could see more new entrants into the property market.  However, he admits that many potential buyers remain understandably cautious.   Tyson suggests that beginning of the year service charge increases which can include everything from rates, water and electricity to annual insurance premium increases are likely to keep inflation above the Reserve Bank’s preferred 3% band as is the case at present.  “Both bonuses and salary increases are likely to be muted on the back of restrained economic growth, the poor performance of the global economy and tariff turbulence and geopolitical tensions that have not yet disappeared. People have to decide to purchase a home when it is financially the right time for them and that might not be the case right now. However, a cautious investor that is planning for the future is a good investor and one which the property sector should support,” Tyson suggests.  He believes it is this investor who will ultimately benefit from the resumption of interest rate cuts by the middle of 2026 when inflation settles around the 3% mark and there is less stress on household disposable income.  In light of this, Tyson advises both existing homeowners and those contemplating buying properties to keep sustainable investment top of mind. That could mean saving end of year bonuses towards a healthy deposit that will not only ensure a pre-approved bond and good rates from financiers but also ensure that bond repayments are compatible with overall household spending.  As interest rates settle into a short-term holding pattern, Tyson also advises that people closely review unnecessary expenses such as unused data contracts or subscriptions: “Make sure that any increases in insurance premiums take into account any depreciation in assets and shop around for comparative packages that might save money. In short, it is a good idea to find those small potential savings in multiple areas that add up to a larger sum that paves the way for a comfortable bond repayment on a property asset that will appreciate.” Most importantly, Tyson is confident that further interest rate cuts will make property even more affordable in 2026. He encourages those that are considering buying their first apartment or home to begin shopping: “Start talking to a property professional. At Tyson Properties we have a team that will guide both new buyers and second timers who are looking to spread their wings taking into account the challenges within the current business climate,” he concludes.
