  • Prof Theuns Pelser - Should you specialise in a manufacturing MBA?

A speaker remarked at a recent MBA expo in Johannesburg: “Selecting an MBA has become a minefield: full-time, part-time, hybrid, blended, distance, online, one-year, two-year and even five-year programmes, synchronous, asynchronous, block release study, weekend studies ... How do you begin to choose?” The following criteria should be considered when choosing an MBA programme: 1. Career Goals Determine your career objectives and whether the MBA programme aligns with them. Through the partnership with GIBS Business School ( Gordon Institute of Business Science ) and Toyota Wessels Institute for Manufacturing Studies , you can specialise in a manufacturing focused MBA. 2. Accreditation Ensure that the MBA programme is accredited by a recognised accrediting body. GIBS Business School ( Gordon Institute of Business Science ) is Triple Crown accredited, holding EQUIS accreditation from the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), as well as accreditation from the Association of MBAs (AMBA), and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). 3. Programme Reputation Research the reputation of the business school and MBA programme. Look at rankings, faculty expertise, and alumni success. In the five years of offering the manufacturing MBA, the Toyota Wessels Institute for Manufacturing Studies has delivered high academic standards, including two overall top MBA students on the GIBS MBA programme. 4. Networking Opportunities Assess the school’s alumni network and its connections to industries or companies you are interested in. Networking can significantly benefit MBA programmes and the students at the Toyota Wessels Institute for Manufacturing Studies belong to a community of high calibre manufacturing leaders. 5. Cost and Financial Aid Evaluate the cost of tuition and other expenses. Consider your financial situation and research scholarships, grants, and loans that may be available. As you probably will only do one MBA in your lifetime, quality over cost should be the deciding factor. Toyota Wessels Institute for Manufacturing Studies offer the Manufacturing Ambassador Scholarship . Ultimately, the right MBA programme will be one that not only meets your career and educational objectives but also fits your unique circumstances and aspirations. Conduct thorough research, visit campuses if possible, and speak with current students and alumni to gather as much information as possible before making your decision. Scholarship Summary Toyota Wessels Institute for Manufacturing Studies (TWIMS) Scholarship Summary. Background TWIMS was founded in 2018 with the vision of achieving an industrialised Africa based on world-class manufacturing. TWIMS partners with the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) to offer an MBA with a manufacturing focus, which is taught exclusively at TWIMS’ modern campus in Kloof, Durban. Need for Scholarships Recognising the financial barriers faced by many deserving South Africans in accessing the GIBS MBA, TWIMS has introduced the Manufacturing Ambassador Scholarship. Thanks to an endowment from the Toyota South Africa Educational Trust, up to 20 scholarships will be awarded annually from 2021. Scholarships cover 50% of the PGDip and up to 70% of MBA tuition, global module expenses, and residency costs during block releases and exam periods. Eligibility & Requirements Open to all South Africans with interest in manufacturing or related sectors. Only those with remarkable talent and a deep commitment to African industrialisation qualify. Scholarship recipients will operate as ‘goodwill’ ambassadors of TWIMS and GIBS MBA (manufacturing focus) and must adhere to top ethical standards. A signed contract confirming these obligations is needed. Application Process Firstly, candidates must apply for the GIBS MBA (manufacturing focus). This application is independent of TWIMS, and costs aren’t reimbursed by TWIMS. Only high-calibre students are accepted, and those not accepted by GIBS won’t qualify for the scholarship. • Getrude Nonhlanhla Ndlovu - I have never given up on my dreams

Founder Getnon Perfect Stitch and Trim Getrude Nonhlanhla Ndlovu is the founder of a company called Getnon Perfect Stitch and Trim. The name, she says means, “I get what I want, and no-one can stop me.” This name well represents Getrude’s dynamic approach to all her endeavours. Her husband died when their children were young, so she has been a single mother to her five children for most of their lives, and now has 15 grandchildren. Getrude explained that her sewing career started from an early age. She was 10 years old when her mother taught her to sew on a manual sewing machine and she was given sewing tasks to complete. Getrude commented that as these tasks stopped her from playing, she used to feel resentful. Now, she has realised that her mother assisted in developing a talent in her, which has served her well. This talent is especially relevant as Getrude never attended school. During the early years of her marriage, Getrude lived in Hammarsdale and got a job as a machinist in the textile industry manufacturing car airbags. Getrude worked there for six years and became a team leader. When she was retrenched, due to the company’s closure, she bought two industrial machines and worked at home doing alterations and making church uniforms. In 2018 she decided to return to factory work because business was very slow. A pivotal role Getrude’s successful application for a job as a qualified machinist resulted in her obtaining a position as a causal worker at the Wonderbag™ factory in Tongaat. The Wonderbag is an award winning non-electric slow cooker that uses heat retention technology to continue cooking food once removed from the heat source. Importantly, the Wonderbag business is owned by Sarah Collins, who has played a pivotal role in Getrude’s journey. “In 2019, Sarah came to the factory with questionnaires asking the staff how the company could be improved. The question asking how she could improve her company caught my attention,” explained Getrude. “I said that I wanted to open my own small factory to manufacture bags and supply them back to Wonderbag. Sarah accepted that request, without hesitating, because she trusted me and because she had a lot of orders for the bags.” In January 2020 Getrude found a site for her factory, and Sarah contributed two industrial machines. Getrude hired four machinists and two general workers to clean the bags. Initially, Getrude appointed a production manager while she continued with her job at the Wonderbag factory. However, she said this manager failed in his role and she was forced to leave Wonderbag to manage her business. Getrude added that Sarah was very supportive of her endeavour. “Sarah is a wonderful person who has helped make me, she is my role model. Sarah is very supportive because when I need help, she’s a shoulder to cry on.” Her factory, says Getrude, now supplies 1500 bags per week, 6 000 per month, and she has 28 staff members. Many challenges Getrude has experienced many challenges in establishing her business. Covid was an initial problem and the business had to close. Loadshedding has also had an impact as during these times, the machinists cannot operate. When they cannot work then there no pay. Another problem that Getrude has experienced is dealing with staff from different backgrounds. She says that her staff do not always have the same insights, so she needs to communicate with them and encourage them to work as a team. “I give them the advice that there must be no fighting in the socialising outside of the workplace to avoid conflict.” In addition, says Getrude, she leads by example. “I’m still a machinist. If there’s someone who is absent, I sit down and do my job to reach the target. I’m not a boss to them, I’m their friend. I’m their mother. They call me Granny, Gogo. I’m that person they can go to for help.” More job opportunities Although Getrude plans to continue to work for Sarah, she is always looking for possibilities to open more businesses, to employ more staff and to give more job opportunities through creating employment. She explained that she would like to open a bakery in the rural area where she was born as bread is very scarce there. Getrude says that she is very driven and a very strong person who always gives of her best. She added, “I have never given up on my dreams and even if you fail – you shouldn’t give up.” In advising young people Getrude would say that they should not stay in one place and hold only one job. “They must keep on thinking what they going to do to move on with their lives, especially while they are still young. I advise them to work with me, but they must do something else to earn some money, and not to rely only on what I’m paying them.” Open heart Getrude is very community minded and explains that she is open hearted with a strong desire to uplift the people around her especially those who are less fortunate. She says, “I want to collect all the young people to give them jobs. I like to help the community. If someone comes and cries Gogo, I’m hungry, I need some money, then my heart is very open, and my hands are open.” In addition, Getrude is an active participant in her church and is contributing to the costs of a new building. She added that she trusts God a lot and each day, at the factory before work, they pray to God to be with them, to guide and protect them. In conclusion, Getrude commented that she is very happy and excited to be part of the KZN Top Business Women initiative especially as it is reinforcing herself as a role model in her community and that her story will be shared to motivate other people to succeed.

  • TAMI goes international, while also creating opportunity for local South African businesses

TAMI is a valuable inbound business portal where international organisations interested in trading in South Africa can interact with relevant service providers and/or professional in-country facilitators. In addition, Tami is a networking platform for South African organisations for local and international business content and linkages. There is no doubt that South Africa has huge international attraction for its local produce, goods, and commodities. There are many good reasons why South African business leaders and entrepreneurs should think positively about international trade. Inbound and outbound flows of transactions are critical in creating enduring international relationships, and in ensuring ongoing and predictable flows of sales and purchases of produce, goods, and commodities. The Africa Marketing Initiative (TAMI) is one of many organisations in South Africa helping to encourage ongoing and predictable trade into and from South Africa. Through the South African Chamber United Kingdom, the KwaZulu-Natal Growth Coalition, and the Commonwealth Entrepreneurs Club, TAMI is becoming an effective tool for international business leaders and governments to engage directly with private and public sector specialist organisations within South Africa. Inbound business portal TAMI is an inbound business portal, making it easy for international organisations, interested in understanding how business works in South Africa, to speak directly to private sector business specialists in each of the following functional areas: Banking Staffing and employment administration Accounting and financial reporting Legal compliance and best practice Understanding and communicating with specific target markets Black economic empowerment parameters Managing sustainability expectations Effective operations and logistics management Facilitating efficient cross border financial transactions Creating an online digital presence Providing mobility services Engaging property experts Each of the TAMI service providers have prequalified as ethical and effective organisations and are regarded as good corporate citizens. TAMI also creates direct links to public sector organisations such as the SA Revenue Service; Department of Employment and Labour; Department of Home Affairs, Department of Trade, Competition, and Industry; Trade and Investment KwaZulu-Natal; Invest Durban; KwaZulu-Natal Business Chambers Council; and South African Chamber United Kingdom. A Knowledge Source TAMI’s initial intention was to encourage only international trade opportunities into South Africa. However, it has now also become a knowledge source and networking facility for local South African organisations, who are now able to join as TAMI Circle Members. Immediately on joining, TAMI Circle members become included in the South African Chamber United Kingdom mailing list and receive invitations for business powered webinars, newsletters, and also invitations and local content from the KwaZulu-Natal Business Chambers Council. TAMI Circle Members join and remain members at no cost, and also become members of the Commonwealth Entrepreneurs Club. The Commonwealth Entrepreneurs Club is a global networking platform for trade and collaboration, whose purpose is promoting SMEs and opening doors for entrepreneurs, industrialists, traders, and various service providers. TAMI therefore has two direct outcomes, both of which are related to networking and collaboration. The first being a business portal where international organisations can speak to capable and reliable South African functional area service providers and/or a professional in-country facilitator. The second being a networking platform for South African organisations to join where they can receive local and international business content and linkages. Direct Linkages Through the SA Chamber United Kingdom, TAMI is being introduced around the world, to encourage chambers to inform their members of TAMI’s direct linkages to business solutions and business advice in South Africa. The Ireland Chapter of the South African Chamber of Commerce United Kingdom Chamber is in the process of setting up an Ireland TAMI, and thus making it possible for South African and international organisations to gain opportunity to interact directly with Irish public and private sector organisations in Ireland. With Ireland creating their own TAMI team of professional support service providers, it aims to encourage business and trade linkages between Ireland and South Africa. We encourage South African organisations to visit the TAMI portal (www.tami.org.za), to register on the site as Circle Members, and to become part of an organisation focused on delivering exceptional business content, providing access to networks and opportunities locally and abroad, and where appropriate to provide direct introductions to help improve local and international trade effectiveness. The TAMI mission is simple. We are intent on creating a business platform, that benefits both international and local South African business leaders in their attempt to create thriving and sustainable organisations. • Capt Londy Ngcobo - By ‘peeling the onion’ layer by layer, you realise that our hearts beat the same

Managing Director, Womaritime Experts and Founder, Global Maritime Youth Captain Londy Ngcobo, is by profession, a ship navigational officer and notably is Africa’s first female dredge master. Londy is managing director of Womaritime Experts, a company that does consulting in the oceans economy, offers training, special projects as well as manning and recruitment. She is also the founder of Global Maritime Youth, which facilitates skills supply and demand globally of youth seeking a career in the ocean industry. Londy’s career choice was simply a progression of her love for the ocean where she felt she belonged. As a young girl, Londy felt a pure connection with the ocean, and commented with a laugh, “As a teenager, it didn’t help that I loved horoscopes, and my sign was Pisces.” She went on to study maritime studies and began working on container ships for Maersk Shipping Lines where she started as an officer and worked her way up the ranks to third officer. Londy then moved to Africa where she worked on dredges and became Africa’s first female dredge master. Over this time Londy noticed the many challenges within this industry and felt that she needed to be the ‘voice of the change she wanted to see’. And so, her company, Womaritime Experts, was born. A man’s world Being a woman in the maritime industry is still unusual today, where there is only 2% female participation globally. This is the reason why her company was derived from women in maritime, to edify women within their maritime professions, and through the work her consultancy does, to multiply the number of women within the maritime industry. In this challenging, yet exciting industry, Londy shares that she has been motivated by a lot of different people. But, what has made her stay within the industry, is the authentic feel of the ocean and knowing that this is where she belongs. Londy’s business means that she is now land-based most of the time. However, that she still gets to go on board ships when required as part of the services offered by her consultancy. Londy’s peers around her have, over the years, motivated her to move from one vessel to another and to climb the ranks. Many of the men within her industry have inspired her through their passion and dedication. These are men who leave their families for months at a time yet stay connected with their wives and children. Men have also seen her fit to go behind the wheel, rise in the ranks, and to represent women in this industry. “I know that it’s cliché,” says Londy, “that although it’s very small in number, but men, to some degree, are very supportive, and I’ve been inspired by a few captains within my industry.” Facing challenges Londy believes that the challenges she has experienced in her industry, are common to what most women experience in a predominantly male environment, such as feeling excluded and unwanted. However, many women are now coming out to talk about and address these issues. “When I started my career, I was a very young teenager of only 18 years of age, and being away from home, I was homesick. To chase a dream and miss out on life, was a challenge,” shared Londy. “However, with time, you realise that it’s all worth it.” For Londy, remaining grounded in how she was raised, who she was, and keeping rooted and focused on why she was doing what she was, helped her overcome the challenge of being homesick. The tangible reward for Londy was coming back to Africa and being a first in her industry, which made the dream visible and fulfilling. She added that she got to realise that as much as she felt different most of the time on board the ships, that people experienced the same challenges. “Although time on board the ships was challenging,I came to realise that by ‘peeling the onion’ layer by layer, the layer of colour, or of gender, you realise that our hearts beat the same, and you begin to see people as people.” Londy would like to see the industry being more balanced and inclusive. “Diversity is a numbers game where the current 2% stats can rise to 50-50 tomorrow, but inclusion is cultivated,” she says. Londy’s wish is to get into rooms where men are for women in the workplace and walk alongside them. Ocean opportunities Her future goal for tomorrow’s youth is that their eyes will be opened to the vast number of careers available on the ocean and that they are ‘beautifully blended with the land’. A range of careers such as a makeup artist, a DJ, a mechanical engineer, an electrician, a diver, a singer, and many more, are well accommodated on board ships and within the ocean's economy. “Interestingly, kids call me the black mermaid and I find it so intriguing that they want to be like Captain Londy. Which is why waking up and showing up for the young girls who want to be like me, even on social media, has become a mission for me,” says Londy. Londy chuckles, “A joke that we still listen to is that a black man can’t swim.” She added, “We’re cultivating a pure love for the ocean so that the youth can know very early that should they get to their grade 12, there is more options than the land provides.” We see you Londy misses the silence of the ocean. So to unwind and relax, she focuses on quietening the noise experienced on land, through meditation and journaling, and little moments of silence, and reminds herself why she shows up every single morning. “The KZN Top Business initiative means everything to me as a woman entrepreneur, who is navigating unchartered waters. Amidst the noise we often question ourselves. So, for me, this nomination is a validation that says, we see you. This anchors me in many ways,” concluded Londy

  • Deashini Moonsamy - Learning to manage your time will be key to your success

Owner, Hydratool Deashini (Dee) Moonsamy is the proud mom of two adult sons. Her eldest son is 27 and he is a chartered accountant, her youngest son is 21 years old and he is in his third year studying electrical engineering at the University of Pretoria. Dee says that her husband is also an entrepreneur and he’s her ‘go to life partner in business’. Dee’s journey began in 1995 when she worked with her husband at Morgans Transport in Port Shepstone. After gaining valuable experience in the transport sector, the couple realised that there was a lack of diesel mechanics in the area. They decided to bridge that gap and open their own workshop to do all their in-house repairs. “Our workshop rapidly grew into a thriving and lucrative venture, we are now still doing work for Mercedes, Volvo, Man Trucks and many other prominent transporters in the area,” explained Dee. However, they noticed that they were experiencing a huge problem in sourcing parts to service these trucks. So said Dee, “We took another bold step and opened Hydratool in 2009. Initially it started as a joint venture, but due to work constraints, my husband could not cope, and I was left to run Hydratool by myself.” Hydratool specialises in industrial filtration, lubrication, pneumatic and power tools, and all hydraulic components. The company caters to the mining, agricultural, construction, manufacturing, and the automotive sectors. Learning the ropes Dee said that she had no clue as to what she was getting herself into, especially as back then it was a male dominated industry. She explained, “I had to quickly learn the ropes and figure how I would succeed. I was not knowledgeable in hydraulics or filtration. I was used to extracting information from spread sheets and processing balance sheets, doing cash flow statements. I didn’t even know how to do a stock take.” In addition, Dee said, back then her boys were 13 and 7 years old; she was juggling being a mother and trying her best to make this venture work. “Google and YouTube became my new friends,” explained Dee with a smile. However, her success meant that she had suppliers approaching her and giving her sole distributorship to sell their products. “That empowered me to thrive. I was given the Donaldson Filtration distributorship in 2013 and was awarded in 2014 for Top sales in KZN. Today I’m the only woman in KZN that still has the Donaldson filtration distributorship,” explained Dee. Dee is deeply involved in a collaboration with the TVET Colleges and Trade schools, where her company supplies these institutions with all the necessary workshop apparatus needed to complete their syllabus and curriculum. “We are committed to supporting the learning journey of these students. We conduct apprenticeship programmes for students to offer the hands-on experience and practical knowledge that supplements their theoretical education,” explained Dee. Consequently, they have been successful in producing many qualified diesel mechanics, welders, workshop assistants and other artisans. They are also involved in teaching people how to drive heavy duty vehicles. “I remember doing my first driver training lesson in 1996 on an Iveco Truck. I also drove an Actros with a super-link timber trailer from Port Shepstone to Harding when I was pregnant with my first child,” recalled Dee. “Being a part of these initiatives is incredibly rewarding as we are not only helping the students gain valuable skills, we are empowering them to pursue successful careers.” Sheer determination Dee says that her journey has been shaped by sheer determination, a strong work ethic and a deep passion for what she does. “The pursuit of innovation and continuous learning has kept me inspired. The evolving nature of business pushes me to stay ahead of new technologies. My drive to innovate has kept our business relevant and also fostered a culture of growth within our team.” In addition, says Dee, her mom has been her biggest motivator. “She always says I was never born to fail. My family has been a constant pillar of strength, always encouraging me.” Dee’s husband provides her with the strategic guidance when she needs it and her mother-in-law often provides support. Business challenges have presented Dee with the opportunity for growth and leaning. “My initial challenge was establishing Hydratool in a competitive market. Building a reputation and gaining the trust of clients required constant effort. Economic fluctuation has also been a challenge as most of our products are imported and based on the dollar rate. Market uncertainties have impacted the demand for our products. To overcome this, we’ve had to focus on diversifying our product range and expanding our client base across different industries.” “Ultimately the challenges I have faced have taught me to remain resilient and proactive, rather than seeing these challenges as roadblocks, I have chosen to see them as opportunities,” explained Dee. Looking ahead Looking ahead Dee is dedicated to giving back to the community that has supported her. She plans to expand their community initiatives with the TVET colleges and trade schools, offering more educational and skill building opportunities. She is also hoping that when her son completes his degree in electrical engineering that he will start a programme for these colleges. To young women, Dee says, that there is one person in the world that you will be spending your entire life with and that’s yourself. “So take care of your mind, take care of your health and always be proud of who you are. Learning to manage your time will be key to your success. Remember that your journey is uniquely yours and each step you take contributes to your own growth.” Dee enjoys reading in her spare time and unwinds by spending time with friends. She also enjoys knitting and crocheting as well as spending time in her garden. She added that she loves going on holidays. Being part of KZN Top Business Women allows her the opportunity to commemorate all her achievements.

  • Dr Parushinee Naidoo - how you have connect with people, will ultimately determine your success

Founder of Skin Solutions Aesthetic Clinic Dr Parushinee Naidoo is the founder of Skin Solutions Aesthetic Clinic which has practices in Umhlanga and Ballito. Skin Solutions is renowned for bringing internationally acclaimed medical grade treatments to the shores of KwaZulu-Natal. They have introduced and found ways to combine African botanicals with the highest quality in medical aesthetics. In 2020, Parushinee developed her own skin care brand that combines African pharmaceuticals and botanicals with medical grade ingredients, focusing specifically on South African skin. Parushinee also considers her clinics a hub of education and skin solutions as they offer mentorship programmes and education for doctors and therapists. The aim is to not only upscale their skill but improve the overall level of service in South Africa when it comes to the skin care industry. Passion for connecting Commenting on her journey, Parushinee says that founding Skin Solutions is based on her teenage years and being a young adult. She explained, “I struggled with debilitating acne growing up and I never felt comfortable in my own skin. I always had a passion for connecting with people and for helping people live their fullest lives. I think that studying medicine was marrying those two passions together.” Although she added that becoming a mother is what made her take that step to opening her first Skin Solutions clinic. “I felt that I could not be encouraging my children to follow their dreams if I was not living my truth in following my own,” she explained. Parushinee says that she takes inspiration from everywhere – including her kids, her mom, and from the girls that are a part of her clinic. “Everybody has something to share that can help you elevate yourself. I find that every day someone will inspire you in some way.” Over the years, Parushinee’s journey has not been without both personal and professional challenges. She explained that from a professional point of view, being a young brown female in an industry where she was definitely the minority was extremely challenging. Parushinee struggled to figure out how she was going to make her mark in the aesthetic industry. However, she said, “It all came down to embracing what made me unique. I focused on finding ways to make myself relatable to my community and my patients.” In addition, Parushinee focuses on providing quality service and the safest and most effective treatments. She strives to keep herself and her business authentic and real. From a personal point of view, Parushinee says the challenges she has had are the same as every woman out there. For her, that’s how to juggle all the roles of being a mom, an entrepreneur, a wife, a sister, and a mentor – something she is still working on. In order to meet these challenges Parushinee focuses on her time management skills, completing one task at a time and giving it 100%, which has helped her. She added that she has also learned to delegate, which not only empowers the people around her, but makes time for the things that she can truly impact on. Goal Driven Parushinee says that she is very goal driven, and the recently opening of her clinic in Ballito has been exciting and positive. She added that the reception that that clinic has received has made her consider opening more clinics in the future. “We have a massive following on social media and a lot of our followers are not in KZN so there are thoughts of going bigger or nationally with regards to our education platforms.” Parushinee would like to offer more mentorship programmes to grow her brand and to elevate the quality of the industry. In guiding young people. she would say that there is no success without passion. “If you love what you do and you do it well, the rewards will just follow.” The other thing she recommends is to see the value of connecting with people, of building relationships and not just with people that you think can help you, but also with people that you are influencing and who you inspire. Parushinee added, ‘Irrespective of what industry you are in, how you have connected with people and how you make them feel will ultimately determine your success.” In addition, she stressed the importance of embracing technology within your industry to stay ahead of the curve and actually make an impact. Skin Solutions is proud to have achieved just that – combining African roots with international grade equipment and technologies to bring South African patients the best quality skin care. Social Development Skin Solutions is not only a local based skin care range, but they use the proceeds of the skin care range to partake in multiple social development projects. One of these, is that they participate in monthly drives to collect sanitary towels from their clients. In addition, a portion of proceeds from the Skin Solutions’ skin care range is used to purchase pads every month, all of which are distributed to different schools over the term. “I think that if you can get young girls to attend school on a regular basis, it will vastly impact the level of education,” said Parushinee. “On a regular basis, we are very involved in the breast cancer awareness campaign, and we also support smaller initiatives in communities that are trying to uplift women and children.” “I take the mentorship programmes very seriously,” commented Parushinee. “Because I feel if you are able to pay it forward in some way, you are elevating the whole community in which we are actually doing business.” Parushinee said she was extremely surprised to be nominated as a KZN Top Business Women 2023 and humbled and honoured to know the work that she is doing is being recognised. “I really want to use the platform that this has created for me to build on the initiatives that I am doing personally, like the woman empowerment and mentorship. It’s so amazing.”
