  • Empowerment fund boost for SA’s circular economy

An empowerment fund created by one of South Africa’s longest-standing producer responsibility organisations is starting to deliver on its mandate to bolster small to medium-sized businesses and move them up the collection and recycling value chain. The Petco Empowerment Fund, which is funded by contributions from Petco’s producer members and other benefactors, provides accessible finance and support to B-BBEE Level 1 SMMEs to help them increase their operational capacity, thereby contributing to their increased ability to collect recyclable materials. Petco chief executive officer Telly Chauke said building a sustainable circular economy requires a vision that goes beyond capacitating players to remain where they are in the collection and recycling value chain, and instead empowers them to grow in scale and impact. “We should be creating a pipeline of growth by providing support at all levels – from waste picker projects right up to emerging industrialists – to assist them to participate meaningfully in the value chain, and ensure a stronger, more inclusive recycling landscape in South Africa,” said Chauke. “Our Petco Empowerment Fund is the result of streamlining and repositioning our development investment strategy to expand beyond our existing, day-to-day support for projects. It allows us to create upward mobility and scale up our developmental impact. Chauke said a number of pre-qualifying SMMEs had already undergone Petco’s rigorous application and selection process, demonstrating their improved capacity, skills and economic viability. One of the first grant recipients, Why Waste in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, is already creating a positive economic ripple effect in the surrounding communities through the buying and selling of post-consumer recyclable packaging. The 100% black-owned business, which has been operating in the sector for almost 30 years, currently employs 59 community members and trades with a network of around 230 independent waste collectors, collecting over 6000 tonnes of recyclable materials annually. Why Waste used the bulk of the R1.3 million grant funding to purchase capital equipment, recently taking delivery of a four-ton truck, double-axle trailer and mobile baling machine. Speaking at the handover ceremony, Why Waste’s head of finance and marketing, Razia Patel, described the grant and equipment as “transformational”. “Prior to this, our collections and baling processes were limited by logistics and manual handling constraints. With this new equipment, we are now able to process more recyclables, reduce transport costs, and improve turnaround times,” Patel said. She said the equipment had already enabled Why Waste to extend its reach into under-served areas and increase collection frequencies. “The mobile baler allows us to compact recyclables at source, reducing transportation bulk and enabling us to collect higher volumes more cost-effectively. With the additional truck and trailer, we have also been able to establish new collection routes, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where packaging waste often goes uncollected. As a result, we’ve seen a significant increase in volumes collected.” More importantly, Patel said, the grant had already had a direct and positive effect on the communities they serve. “We’ve been able to onboard more local waste pickers by supplying them with bags and providing consistent buy-back support. Our operations now support more livelihoods through direct and indirect employment, including drivers, loaders, and baling staff.” Additionally, she said, the increased throughput had allowed Why Waste to engage more local businesses and SMMEs in the recycling value chain, creating a more inclusive and sustainable ecosystem. “The improved logistics and processing capability also mean we can offer more reliable services to schools, shopping centres, and community collection points, helping embed a culture of recycling in the areas we serve.” It is Why Waste’s on-going community engagement efforts, particularly among local schools, that saw the business earn the 2023 Petco Award in the Environmental and Education Awareness Initiative category. Petco’s general manager for recycling and collections, Samu Mkhize, said the company was selected for the grant based on its alignment with Petco’s core funding priorities of transformation, enterprise development, impact and growth potential, as well as sustainability and localisation. Aside from the socio-economic benefits, Why Waste projects to grow its collection volumes by 20 to 25%, which will see an additional 1000 to 1500 tonnes of recyclable packaging kept out of the environment or landfill each year. “Why Waste has demonstrated its commitment to inclusive employment practices, has a history of community empowerment as well as proven operational capacity, with high – and growing – recycling volumes that are stimulating the local green economy,” said Mkhize. Patel added that it was gratifying to have their efforts acknowledged and supported. “This support is deeply meaningful to us – not just as a boost in productivity, but as a vote of confidence in our mission to drive sustainable waste management in South Africa. It empowers us to grow responsibly while strengthening our ability to divert valuable materials from landfill.” Businesses and potential contributors looking to spend their CSI funding allocation through this fund can email corpgov@petco.co.za – Section 18A certificate can be issued for all donations received. Working together: One of the Petco Empowerment Fund’s first grant recipients, Why Waste in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, is excited to use its new truck and trailer to create a positive economic impact on surrounding communities by growing the buying and selling of recyclable packaging. • Buying in a Hot Market? Here’s What You Need to Know

The property market is heating up—and fast. With limited inventory, rising demand, and quicker turnaround times, buying a home in a hot market can feel overwhelming. But don’t worry: with the right approach and a flexible mindset, you can still find (and win) your dream home. At INGWE – The Property Company SA , we’re here to help you navigate the fast-paced world of property buying. Whether you're a first-time buyer or a seasoned homeowner, here’s what you need to know to succeed in a competitive market. 1. Get Prequalified, Pronto In a hot market, timing is everything. Being prequalified for a home loan not only helps you understand your budget—it also shows sellers that you mean business. It puts you in a stronger position to make quick, credible offers and compete with other buyers. Bottom line:  Don’t wait until you find the perfect home to get your finances in order. Get prequalified now so you’re ready to make a move when the opportunity arises. 2. Stay Open-Minded Your dream home might not come in the exact package you imagined—and that’s okay. In a competitive market, being flexible on things like style, size, or location can open up a whole new range of possibilities. Be willing to explore homes that don’t check every box on your list. Some of the best opportunities come from seeing potential, not perfection. Keep your mind open—you might be surprised by what you find. 3. Think Outside the Box Sometimes the right home is just outside your typical search radius or looks a little different from what you expected. Don’t be afraid to broaden your search. Look in neighbouring suburbs, consider homes with renovation potential, or rethink your layout preferences. By expanding your boundaries, you increase your chances of discovering a hidden gem others might overlook. Creativity and flexibility can make all the difference. 4. Prioritise Your Needs In a fast-moving market, you may need to compromise on some of your “wants” to secure what you truly need. The key is to clearly identify what matters most to you—whether it's location, size, security, or lifestyle features—and stay focused on those priorities. Make peace with letting go of smaller wish-list items if it means landing a home that ticks the big boxes. A little compromise now can lead to long-term happiness later. Final Thoughts Buying in a hot market may feel like a race, but with preparation, open-mindedness, and the right support, you can make confident, informed decisions—and find a place that feels just right. At INGWE – The Property Company SA , we’re here to guide you through every step of the journey. From prequalification to viewing to closing the deal, we’ve got your back. Let’s find your perfect place—even in a hot market.

  • Price it Right, Watch it Take Flight!

When it comes to selling your home, the price you set from the very start can make all the difference between a quick, profitable sale and months of frustration. Many homeowners make the mistake of starting too high, thinking they can always lower the price later. But here’s the truth: overpricing can create the wrong first impression, making buyers hesitate or overlook your property altogether. Once that happens, the excitement around your listing fades, and even after price cuts, it can be harder to attract serious offers. The Power of the Right Price Setting the right price early means you’re aligning with the current market, appealing to serious buyers, and encouraging quicker offers. It positions your home competitively while showing potential buyers you’re realistic and motivated – two qualities that can spark immediate interest. Just like the imagery in our campaign – a charming home carried effortlessly into the sky by vibrant balloons – the right pricing can lift your property above the competition and help it “take flight” in the market. Why Work with Us? At INGWE – The Property Company SA, We provide professional, data-driven valuations based on local market trends, recent sales, and the unique features of your home. Our goal is to help you secure the full value your property deserves – without the delays or setbacks that come with overpricing. 📞 Contact us today for a FREE valuation:   031 701 9898 Let’s give your home the perfect lift-off into its next chapter.

  • Joudalle Govender - Keep knocking on those doors, always be polite, even when it’s tough

Director and co-owner, Argento Trading 117cc Joudalle Govender is the director and co-owner of Argento Trading 117cc in Isithebe, which manufactures clothing for both corporate and retail clients. Joudalle is a remarkable businesswoman whose journey to becoming a prominent figure in the world of clothing manufacturing is inspiring. Her story is one of determination, resilience, and a deep commitment to making a positive impact on the women of her community. Argento Trading 117cc, under Joudalle’s visionary leadership, has evolved into a thriving company. With a predominantly female workforce of 70 employees, she has created a workplace that prioritises inclusivity and collaboration. A big word For Joudalle, achieving is quite a big word. She says, ‘I don’t know how you would describe achieving, but for me every day is an achievement. Every little thing is an achievement. We have a culture of continuous improvement. So, it’s easy to achieve things on a daily basis.” One of her most significant achievements, she believes, is fostering a culture of stability within her company, where inclusivity and collaboration are the driving forces. “It’s no easy feat when you have to get 70 ladies to all be in agreement at any one time,” says Joudalle with a laugh. This dedication to creating a harmonious and empowering workplace has led Argento Trading 117cc to be recognised as the fastest-growing small medium enterprise through the SME Accelerator programme in 2023. However, Joudalle says that her biggest achievement, and Argento’s as well, has been opening a training school for 18 young women from rural areas. She commented, ‘I think the training school was a highlight for me as a leader, which goes far beyond just monetary value, as leaving a legacy behind is important.” A Positive Contribution Although Joudalle came from a corporate background which she enjoyed, her journey into entrepreneurship began five years ago when her retired husband entrusted her with a building, igniting the spark for their business venture. Joudalle was motivated to make a positive contribution to their community. “It was a dream to do something good in this bad world, to establish something that would make a positive impact.” Her aim was not initially to be a manufacturing company, in fact, they started as an industrial tool company. However, driven by a deep sense of purpose, Joudalle chose clothing manufacturing as her avenue to create a lasting impact. She said with a smile, “After all, what lady doesn’t like clothing?” In addition, Joudalle had witnessed the decline of the manufacturing hub in Isithebe and felt compelled to address the need for support in this sector. What started with buying and selling clothing for a company that gave her a chance, then being chosen by that company to incubate after winning a request for a quote, transformed into a thriving manufacturing business. Challenges are opportunities The growth of Argento Trading 117cc has been nothing short of remarkable. Beginning with just four employees and ten second-hand machines the business has now expanded to include 150 machines. However, says Joudalle her primary inspiration to succeed is her dedicated workforce, many of whom are single mothers. Their unwavering commitment to their jobs despite facing significant personal challenges of their own, where they wake up at 4 a.m., walk long distances in a rural area to catch a taxi at 5 a.m. to get to work, and 90% haven’t even finished school, is what continually motivates her. “I think the inspiration came from the fact that they give so much and that’s what I’m giving back in return,” shares Joudalle. Joudalle maintains a personal connection with her employees, influenced by her Indian culture, her upbringing, and her spirituality as a child of God, believing in God’s grace. While Joudalle acknowledges her successes, she also says that struggles come with running a business. “It has been quite a journey,” says Joudalle, “and certainly one not without many challenges.” One of the biggest challenges they faced, was finances; starting a business from zero with no bank balance, just a name and a building, required much perseverance and tenacity. Further challenges encountered were meeting the deadlines of large corporate customers when they didn’t have the skills to support them, not having transportation to deliver the goods, and having to train people at the same time. All of which would be a daunting challenge for any entrepreneur juggling all those balls at once. Joudalle attributes much of the success of the business to her husband’s inspiration and trust, which allowed her the freedom to lead the business as she saw fit. She commented, “Challenges are always there, but I think that from every challenge we have learnt something, we got stronger and are looking forward to the next challenge. ”Her future goals revolve around leaving a legacy in Isithebe that makes a meaningful difference in her community. She would like to have a company that can sustain the next generation of young women seeking employment and empowerment, where localisation plays a large part. Be bold As a successful businesswoman, Joudalle is passionate about encouraging young women to be bold, resilient, and persistent in pursuing their goals. She believes that hard work and determination are the keys to achieving success. “Keep knocking on those doors, always be polite, even when it’s tough,” encourages Joudalle. “There’s no free lunch for anybody in this world, no matter what anybody tells you.” In her rare moments of relaxation, Joudalle cherishes spending time with her five children and occasionally engages in meditation to rejuvenate her spirit. Being recognised as a KZN Top Business Woman is a significant achievement for Joudalle. She views this accolade as a platform that motivates her to work even harder. It serves as recognition of her company’s core values of integrity and respect, while simultaneously inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs. She sees her nomination as a well-deserved pat on her back, which propels her to continue her journey with even greater dedication and passion.
