The eThekwini Municipality has opened nominations for its first-ever Sports Awards. These awards aim to recognise athletes, coaches, teams, and community members who have made a strong contribution to sport in the area.

People from the community, including schools, sports clubs, and organisations, are encouraged to nominate individuals or teams who have shown talent, dedication, and good performance. Nominees must either live in eThekwini or have made a positive impact on sport in the city.

Nominations will close on 15 May 2026, so entries need to be submitted before the deadline.

There are several award categories, such as:

  • Sportsperson of the Year

  • Junior Sportsperson of the Year

  • Coach of the Year

  • Volunteer of the Year

  • Sports Organisation of the Year

  • Technical Official of the Year

  • Recreation or Grassroots Programme of the Year

  • Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability

The municipality says the awards are meant to celebrate local talent, encourage young people to take part in sport, and promote healthy lifestyles. It also hopes the event will bring communities together and support the growth of sport in the region.

Nomination forms can be found online or collected from municipal offices in Durban. The awards are expected to become an annual event that highlights sporting excellence in eThekwini.
