Catching my breath after a morning training session, usually over a good cortado at Old Town Italy or Pirates, I often find myself reflecting on the incredible journey of KZN Top Business over the last 28 years. I’ve had the absolute privilege of sitting down with some of the most dynamic, resilient, and forward-thinking leaders right here in our province.
Through our "Coffee with Grant" chats and the KZN Top Business Portfolio, I’ve seen firsthand how sharing a bit of your journey can completely transform a business. But there is a very special kind of energy—a brilliant mix of absolute graft and grace—that comes through when we shine a light on the female leaders shaping KwaZulu-Natal.
That’s exactly why the KZN Top Business Women initiative is so close to my heart. It’s not just another event on the corporate calendar; it’s a proper platform built to amplify the voices of the women driving our local economy forward, uplifting our communities, and shaping the future of KZN.
A Recognition Ceremony, Not a Competition
Let me clear something up straight away: KZN Top Business Women is a recognition ceremony, not your standard awards gala.
When we put this programme together, we deliberately stepped away from the usual competitive setup. There are no single winners here, because quite frankly, every single lady we select is a winner. Whether you are heading up a massive corporate or driving a brilliant local SMME, you are already achieving incredible things. Pitting our top businesswomen against each other just completely misses the point. Our formula is designed to ensure that every woman we feature is celebrated for her unique journey, her resilience, and her real-world impact.
The Feedback and the Everlasting Digital Imprint
The feedback we get from the ladies who get involved is, without a doubt, the most rewarding part of the whole process. When we catch up for interviews and chat about their experiences, the overriding feeling is one of immense pride. It gives these busy leaders a rare chance to pause and actually appreciate how far they’ve come.
We take all these brilliant stories and put them together in a beautifully produced coffee table book. But what people really need to know is that everything in the book is twinned on the net. The profile is up there, and it is there forever.
The longevity of this whole initiative and its digital imprint is everlasting. Just look at the traction we're seeing. Take Jennifer Reddy from Moran Incorporated and Heather Flack from Flare Accounting, for example. We filmed some quick snippet interviews with them way back after a ceremony around 2021. Those videos are still up on the web and performing exceptionally well today. Just last week, Jennifer’s short interview clocked an unbelievable 448,000 views, and Heather’s pulled in 35,000. It just goes to show that the impact of sharing your story isn't a one-off thing; it's a permanent record of your success that continues to reach new audiences years down the line.
Advocate Pria Hassan, Group CEO of Women of Africa Group, hit the nail on the head when she said, "For far too long many of you have remained behind the limelight. Bring your ventures forward. We want to see your talent."
