Genius Strategy or Defying Business Logic? A Deep Dive into the KZN Top Business Women Model

Someone recently pointed me towards a podcast debate that’s been making the rounds, and I have to say, I found it absolutely fascinating. They were dissecting the exact formula we’ve used every single year since the inception of the KZN Top Business Women initiative. The central question? Is our unique approach a stroke of absolute genius, or does it completely defy standard business logic?

You can listen to the full conversation here: The KZN Top Business Women Recognition Debate

The commentators really got stuck into the mechanics of what we do, debating the pros, the cons, and the “controversial brilliance” of our model. It was quite surreal hearing our life’s work broken down into terms like "manufactured exclusivity" versus a "vertical greenhouse." So, I thought I’d take a moment to share my point of view on the debate.

The "No Single Winner" Controversy

The commentators spent a lot of time dissecting our core philosophy: hosting an elite gala at the Radisson Blu, rolling out the red carpet, and then—at the absolute climax of the evening—refusing to announce a single winner.

One side of the debate argued that this creates a revolutionary "sanctuary"—a genuine peer-to-peer launchpad that democratises celebration. The other side? They argued it's a brilliantly disguised, search-optimised marketing engine fuelled by "anchor tenants" (our billionaires and corporate veterans) to guarantee engagement for the rising entrepreneurs.

My take? It’s not an either/or situation. From day one, my vision was crystal clear: this is a recognition ceremony where everyone is a winner, rather than a traditional award ceremony. When you remove the cut-throat competition, the barriers completely drop. Suddenly, a self-made billionaire and a brilliant, emerging start-up founder are sharing the exact same room, receiving the exact same honour, and genuinely connecting.

The Supermodel Treatment vs. Raw Authenticity

I had a good chuckle when they started analysing the "supermodel treatment" – the framed A1 portraits, the champagne, and the hand-bound, stitched coffee table books from BK Bookbinders right here in Durban. One commentator felt this highly produced theatrics masked the raw, unfiltered truth of female entrepreneurship.

But here is the reality: so many female entrepreneurs operate in the shadows, battling systemic barriers or imposter syndrome. Giving them the premium treatment doesn’t erase the authenticity of their struggles; it validates it. We elevate the aesthetic to match the magnitude of their real-world achievements.

The 48-Hour Pivot

Perhaps the most insightful part of the podcast was their analysis of what they called our "masterstroke"—the 48-hour pivot.

They perfectly captured why we keep Thursday night at the Radisson strictly invitation-only and non-competitive. It protects the women. They get to be present, enjoy their night without the agonising tension of waiting to see who wins, and just celebrate with their peers.

Then comes Saturday evening at 19:00. By shifting the digital premiere to our YouTube channel, we move the recognition out of a locked room and directly into the living room. Partners, children, and neighbours get to gather around the screen and watch the story unfold. It doubles the visibility but zeroes out the fatigue.

The Final Word

Are we a prestige marketing machine, or an egalitarian sanctuary? I’ll let you decide. But I can tell you this: when you stop trying to crown a single victor and start cultivating an entire ecosystem, the results are nothing short of magic.

Whether you agree with our methodology or question the logic, you cannot afford to miss this gripping, deeply authentic discussion happening right here in KZN.
